Could 103.7 go Gen-X?

Since there been rumors of all-90's formats, especially in Las Vegas & elsewhere, could we see 103.7 go all 90's in the future? I know 94.9 & 95.7 (& later 94.1) tried an all 80's format about a decade ago, & that failed. I know 94.9 & 91X (for a while) was classic alternative that played 90's & new wave, 94.1 had some 90's music before it went to Star (I think, who doubts if they play any 90's anymore), & Jack 100.7 likely plays 90's, but they only play few Nirvana, Alice In Chains & Soundgarden & other classic alternative songs. Since San Diego is a conservative radio market, could we see a Gen-X at 103.7 to replace Sophie soon. This station is struggling in the ratings & it looks like it may be towards a format change & likely a new MD/PD soon. Could San Diego be ready for all-90's? We'll see what happens soon.

Struggling?

I would say that Sophie 103.7 is one of the best success stories in San Diego radio in the last decade. I only see the 12+ ratings, but they are in the over-4.0 range now and even beat sister station KYXY in the last book!

To the contrary, it looks like KYXY may need some tune-up and repairs. It has been on auto-pilot since the current PD arrived over a decade ago and did well just repeating formulas put in place long before he arrived, but it's slipping He tried and tried and tried to get 103.7 going but failed at that and it wasn't until they brought in Charese Frugé and the Sophie format that 103.7 finally took off. Rather than changing PD's at 103.7, it sounds like they ought to put her in charge of KYXY too.

Seriously? On autopilot for over 10 years? With the competitive nature of radio, do you think KyXy could just coast along for over a decade. You obviously have great insight analyzing those free 12+ (6+) ratings.

Why yes I do - thanks!

I also have ears, which are especially handy for figuring out what's on the radio. :)

KYXY is one of the great all-time success stories of San Diego radio, but the credit does not go to current management - their job has been to do no harm and to schedule vacation relief. The programming formaty (and pretty much most of the talent line up) precedes them.

I know that EVERYONE at KYXY is quite competent. KYXY undergoes cycles wherein their 6+ (formerly 12+) AQH, all that I normally can see, oscillate over a range. Over the years I’ve noticed peaks that seem to occur during the winter months with valleys occurring during the summer months. Why? I don’t know but can only speculate.

It is true that this recent dip happens to be more pronounced than others, but do you remember the huge rating KYXY scored last winter? If I’m not mistaken it could have been a record for them.

Here’s something else I know: Station billing counts more than anything else and as you probably know, that aspect of their operations is more closely correlated to 25-54 and other saleable demographics. Thus, what one sees in the 6+ category isn’t usually reflected in more refined demographic segments.
