Could 106.5 be sold to Brewer Broadcasting

Just have a question about the divestment of 106.5 from the corporate palooza known as Clear Channel.

Brewer Broadcasting owners of 930 WHON / 96.1 WQLK in Richmond, do you think they could be suitors for 106.5 WDSJ?

Plus dont they own the 8 stations in Chattanooga?

I agree the station should be sold to get it out of its current misery but are we sure that one is going to be divested? It needs people who have some time to put into it for sure. I haven't heard which two stations are supposed to go. It seems like one should be WDSJ but we could end up being surprised.

Brewer would be a suitable buyer for WDSJ. Their stations in Richmond and in the Chattanooga market are ran very professionally.

I wonder what they would do with the station if Brewer did buy it. Would it remain focused on Dayton or would they move the station to Richmond? Good radio in the Richmond area is becoming increasingly harder to find these days with all the Joy FM and K-Love translators in place as well as that pirate station that floats around from frequency to frequency. A new station that isn't Christian would be welcome in the area.

Here is my thought on this.

Brewer takes over 106.5 and turns it to Modern AC. Dont call it Fresh, but something like Magic or My. Utilize it to help staple up WLQT (They are known as the softer music mix to protect WMMX). Dont only focus on Richmond, but say...

FROM RICHMOND TO THE MIAMI VALLEY - MY 106.5 IS THE UPBEAT ATWORK VARIETY, BLAH BLAH, ETC.

Just a crazy idea I know, but I really think it would work. No, your not going to win in Dayton, but it will offer a nice blanket station to turn to whenever you want and it will help win soccer moms everywhere.

97.5 WTGR i know was being shopped around at one point. Who is this Baker Family guy anyhow? Make that 97.5 WHOM - FM

Baker would have a nice little cluster of stations.

Rogers is a great possibility, I was just thinking with the way the market is laid out, 2 50,000 watters would be a nice slice of pie for the ole Brewer gang. Is he ever going to sell the useless AM stick in Georgia?

Plus, WMDH-AM/WMDH-FM and WWKI-FM are up for sale from Citadel/Disney. Should be interesting to see who gets those properties. I for one would love to see a company like Brewer expand up here....

Having worked for Brewer in the Mid-1980's, I agree 106.5 would be a great fit for them.

And, what some of you are saying is correct...106.5 is not, nor can it ever be, a "significant" force in Dayton. It's just too far away for that. It's doing about the best it can now.

But, if the Brewer folks bought it and combo-ed it with Kicks 96.1, if could be very effective for them.

Remember...96.1 was not always country. (It was a Hot A/C almost CHR when I was there.) And yes...
the Brewer folks always ran a good, solid, professional operation. Glad to hear it's still that way.

Woud the new owners move the studios back to Greenville? Halfway between the two market areas would sound logical.

The tower is located just north of there off US 127. Always been a great signal when it came on as WLSN in 1991 after the demise of WDRK a few years earlier.

I am not in Cincinnati and have rarely checked out the landscape of the market there but I am curious to know which of these available frequencies cover the Cincinnati Metro (70% or more) effectively?

The reason I ask is because AM or FM, the Cincinnati Reds may be in the hunt for a frequency...they are currently negotiating with CC about control of their advertising, other teams have purchased stations in the last couple of years and it seems to be a good move so they can control their entire product and also gain from revenues in the off season and higher profile marketing to their fan base.

Just throwing it out there.

106.5 has a better signal North of Dayton then it does South of Dayton. It is barely listenable in Hamilton, so I doubt anyone in Cincy would be interested. I also think it might have a hard time being moved into the Cincy metro area. I think someone who buys it has a good shot of making it a go if they are a full service type station that serves Darke, Auglaize, Mercer, Shelby and Miami, counties; kind of a WMVR / WCSM format, but with a better signal.

There is also WNKR 106.5 in Northern Kentucky which makes WDSJ unlistenable, and I doubt WDSJ could be moved into the Cincy metro. WNKR has a CP for 106.7 though.

MikeStandardsFromIndiana said:
WNKR would be a more likely Move in into Cincinnati than WDSJ would ever be

WNKR could be a move in candidate since WSRW is moving to Chillicothe OH. Their new CP has a stronger signal in areas north of Dry Ridge, KY. I'm not sure how much closer they could move to Cincinnati though.

I'd like to see Brewer get 106.5. They are a quality broadcasting company and really outshine their main competitor in Richmond.

It would be interesting to see them move 106.5 to hot AC and compete head-on against G 101.3, but I'd personally like to see a really good AOR in the Richmond area that acknowledges the fact that rock music continued to be made past 1989.

I really see Brewer could be the suitor for this signal. Clear Channel wont keep it. It doesnt fit their overall DNA.

Latest rumor I heard was that once 101.7 moves to Enon and turns to 101.5, look for it to flip to Oldies.

I would love to see Brewer pick up 106.5 and 97.5 and move them all into Richmond and use the WTGR studios in Greenville as their local broadcast/sales office. Turn 97.5 into a strong AOR and move 106.5 into a contemporary AC to help pull out a few shares from WLQT while keeping it a Richmond, Troy, Tipp City, Greenville, Eaton, Englewood station. Maybe like Fresh, but "fresher" if possible. You would win over the office audience in Richmond hands down.

Re: Could 106.5 be sold to [???] Broadcasting

OK... Can we first agree that musing about who does “better radio in Richmond” is about the same as contrasting jars of peanut-butter—in the generic isle at the supermarket! While neither are particularly-bad; and both may represent a good value—neither can be considered “exceptional”.

So let’s have some fun and play “Radio Jeopardy”...

[cue the “Syncopated Clock”]

FOR $10: WHO is already established in Richmond’s “outback” [and empty leased “sales offices” that store lawn mowers DON’T COUNT]?

[DING] – That would be RODGERS [ask the former boyz from Tell City about lawn-mower storage :D]

FOR $20: WHO needs an excuse for a big new building in The Rose City?

[DING]RODGERS again – especially given the romantic-affinity the Brewers have for “The Radio Ranch”... They DID finally pave that long lane and parking lot thirty years ago to celebrate the visit of Bill Balance ‘ya-know!

FOR $30: WHO retains the accomplished, affable, perennial nice-guy of consultants [Gary Havens] on hot standby?

[DING] – Do I hear a RODGERStriple-play” gathering steam on a station near you?

FOR $40: WHO has the unquestioned experience [and edge] in “high-dollar horse-trading” with largess corporate radio? [remember, were talking CCU here]

[DING] – We appear to have a RODGERS “Royal Flush” at bay!

FOR $18,000,000.00: WHO has the nicest bank account and investment portfolio around... ‘And NOBODY with a lien against it?

[DING DING DING and YOU’RE in the Daily Double] – At the boat, they call it a “Full House” – and David RODGERS may just hold ALL the required cards!

...Now would any of you Poker players or Jeopardy fans care to change the title of this thread?

Mr. Hippo:

Thank you for bringing another dose of reality to this board.

Do you not think Rogers would throw on some Satellite Oldies format on there?
