Could 97.5 Be The First US "Virgin?"

Okay. Let’s dysect the new station coming to Philly tomarro. The liners running this weekend say that something “New and Now” is coming. “New and Now” probably means some form of hit or popular music. Also, all these liners are under the backdrop of female leaning AC and Rhythmic tracks. Now, CKFM in Torronto, ON, CA, has just launched with “Virgin Radio,” a female leaning Hot AC/CHR/Rhythmic station with lots of entertainment news thrown in. Tom Taylor’s Taylor On Radio-info reports that the “Virgin Radio” folks want to take this female leaning brand to larger US markets. Philadelphia is market number 7. Prediction: WJJZ will be the first US “Virgin Radio,” and the next female Rhythmic/CHR/Entertainment news station since “Deva” WDVW New Orleans, LA. Discuss.

From your description, Virgin Radio sounds a lot like Blink 102.7 in NYC, look what happened to it.

Two things: Blink suffered from the same problem that WCBS had when it went from oldies to Jack, namely bad press and bad feelings from the previous audience. And Blink was way ahead of its time. I think the idea was sound, and if done well, could be a huge hit. It would also get radio away from being a jukebox, which I think is a good thing.

Or it could be like [email protected] in San Diego instead.

That would take listeners away from their own "Ben FM." The music is very similar.

I'm still placing my bet on the first US "Virgin Radio." I think it would be a winner for the station, Greater Media, and Philadelphia at large. The music, which is mostly rhythmic in nature, would be a nice companion to it's "Ben FM," instead of a hurt to it. So, in all, Greater Media would have:

Male leaning:
WPEN (Sports)
WMGK (Classic Rock)
WMMR (Modern Rock)

Female leaning:

WBEN ("Ben FM" Adult Hits)
WJJZ ("Virgin Radio" Rhythmic AC/CHR/Entertainment News.)

Now, that's what I call a winning lineup!

It is? Well I am not very familar with the Philly market to be honest with you, however Sophie is a Hot/Modernish AC and not Adult Hits. I do not know what Ben-FM plays though, as each of these adult hits formats are wide and varied. Any chance of it being 90's and Current sans DJ's Radio 92.9 from Boston instead? They are Greater Media owned too.

Sophie *would* still be a good guess if the rumours are true that Buffalo wants a WBEN FM to be an FM repeater of WBEN AM...Ben would have to quietly operate as the same Ben with new calls otherwise.

From the Buffalo board, E9 wrote:

"Now comes word, unconfirmed but from reasonable sources, that Entercom is exploring the idea of putting WBEN's news-talk format on an FM signal well before Arbitron's PPM technology arrives in the Buffalo market."

Discuss? Okay... Let's talk about giving credit where it's due... Do you think you would honestly come up with the idea for this thread if you didn't see this post first?

Looking at their website and the last 5 songs played, they look like a clone of Boston's Magic 106.7 which is also a Greater Media station, and gets big ratings here.
And they're also a clone of Magic 98.3. They can just have the same PD program all 3 stations. 700 miles a week in gas is cheaper than 2 PDs
