Could a DANCE station work in Pro/NB/Cape?

I was talking with a friend out in New Bedford about radio. Even though I live in New York, I have been in the area many times. With that I know about 92 PRO and Fun 107.

Being a HUGE dance music fan, I was wondering if a dance music formatted station would work in the region. You have a diverse enough population, especially in Providence and New Bedford. You get the summer crowds out in the Cape. If anyone knows about Party 105 on the east end of Long Island, NY, it would sound like that.

For this to work, the antenna would have to be near N.B. so that it can hit the Cape and Rhode Island equally.

I guess I'm more curious to know if there is a huge interest in dance music there.

hmmm...as someone who may or may not work for a station who does or does not play occasional dance music...i'll say this...

i like dance music. i dont love it. its like altoids. first couple kick ass, then it starts to taste awful.

fun 107 kind of acts as that dance-music station...yeah it is a rhythmic/dance hybrid...but it is a suitable mix for the market they serve.

i dont see it happening... :-

Yes, absolutely! It would be cool if 97.3 WJFD became a dance station. With 50,000 watts right out of New Bedford, it would have no trouble reaching the Providence, New Bedford and Cape Cod markets in their entirety. There is currently no station in any of these markets that plays a lot of classic and current dance music. Fun 107 plays mainly rhythmic Top 40 but no dance classics. Star 93.7 in Boston played all kinds of dance music: Rhythmic, House, Freestyle, Disco, and Soul. That's what made Star great, you got the new and the old school. I hope we get a dance station soon! With so many rock stations especially in Providence (94 HJY, 95.5 BRU, plus 92 PRO FM and Coast 93.3 which play a lot of rock), we really need one. <P ID="signature">______________

Citadel has been testing dance music down south in New Orleans and Baton Rouge on Diva 92 and Diva 103...so if those prove to be a success and with their many holdings/stations here in southern new england you never know what could pop up...remember hot 106 is a citadel communications station...personal i love Fun 107 (citadel as well) for the station it is...very good playlist...they are actually spinning the #1 song on XM 81 BPM...Jenn Cuneta...come rain come shine...

As I mentioned in the classic rock discussion,a format is more than the music. While WFHN has had some good people here and there and now and then, namely Christin Fox and Guy Walker, they really never have staffed the station with people who fit the format. The morning show totally does not fit.I wouldn't even say it fits a traditional CHR.As far as Michael Rock, there are seasoned people who can make the switch with formats from CHR to rock but Michael is not one of them.At this point I'm not even sure what format he should be working.Apparently it's predestined that regardless of format he will always have a safe refuge at Citadel Fairhaven.

Oh the memories...

100.3, THAAAAA BEEEEEEAT!

I think the best bet for dance music right now is between Fun 107 (rhythmic leaning CHR) and 96.3 the Rose, which I hear is heavy on rhythmic and dance tracks. As nice as it would sound, I think an all-out dance station would probably not do too well. Star in Boston did OK for a while, but never really took off. I would expect the same if say 97.3 were to do a dance format.

Your altoids comment was perfect. I could see it sprinkled in, but I don't think a station could live on it ...

hahah why thank you.

What about doing a dance show on Friday nights every week? You could probably even hook up with a local dj who could produce it every week and get their name out. Or, you could use it as a promotional tool to bring people out to a club where the dj is spinning from. Might be fun, especially in the summer.
