Could a format like this one work in Houston

Hello there i dont usually post to much but just the other day i was on the Dallas Radio board and came across a topic on DFW's best radio station and one or two people mentioned 89.3 KNON FM and i went to their website and was wondering If this kind of format would work in Houston or if there is already one like it where can it be found on the Houston Dial
www.knon.org -here is there website if you wanna check it out
Thanks in advance

A station that plays everything would now work were 104 works nicely here & they play a wide variety of music but not that wide. kpft is close to that so kpft & 104 are that station if you were to combine them.<P ID="signature">______________

KPFT would be the closest thing to KNON here, although there are numerous differences in the stations. The Pacifica political agenda has been a drag on KPFT--the more dogmatic their programming becomes, the smaller the audience. There has been a tug of war for years over the direction KPFT should take-- mouthpiece for political hacks, or local community showcase for diversity. KNON seems to take the latter course, and it has worked for many years now.

KNON is a lineal descendant of KCHU in DFW, which was a failed effort at community programming in the mid-70's. When the station was relaunched a few years later as KNON, organizers had gotten a pretty good idea of what NOT to do. Although there have been some rough stretches, the fact that the station has lasted so long means that they're doing something right.

It would be nice to see such a non-comm station in Houston, but I don't see it happening unless one of the local colleges/universities decides to get out of the radio biz, freeing up a frequency.
