Probably not an all-metal format and I don't think it would exist here in the US.
______________

Back about 10 years ago or so, there WAS a metal format in SA ...
KZDC 1250 AM was, I beleive, co-owned with KZEP at the time and featured metal ...
Was kinda weird hearing metal on AM, though ...

Seems to me like an aggressive rock format might have a greater chance of success than metal with younger demos.

Is there a place for a "classic metal" format?

Does anyone know if KZEP still does their metal shows on sunday nights?

It's 2006. A metal format wouldn't work anywhere other than satellite radio.

Didn't SA have a Z-Rock station back in the 80s?

My metal show always did pretty good on Saturday nights. We played some real heavy stuff as well. My playlist was wide open. I played Dio, Saxon, Meshuggah, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Sabbath, even serious death metal like Deicide and Cannibal Corpse. IT WAS ROWDY!
______________

Yes, San Antonio had a Z-Rock station in the late 80's/early 90's. It was KSJL 760. After KISS 99.5 made its ill-fated switch to oldies in 1990, there were even some billboards for it. However, Q-96 ended up taking much of KISS's AOR format a few months later. I believe KSJL remained Z-Rock for a brief period afterward before taking on the urban AC format.
