Could Artificially Intelligent Jocks Take Over Humans On Air?

Wrote a blog on this.... it is pretty cool. Read it here.

http://blog.mysanantonio.com/domini...lligence-replace-the-human-radio-personality/

I posted the link because the article has video in it. Since we cannot post video on radio-info, I decided against repasting it here. Just click the link.

In the article it describes how I came across some really cool artificial intelligent software that could literally take over my on air position. (And a few other positions within the radio station) Granted it would be a little difficult at first to get her to answer calls and interact with people but eventually that could be figured out. At the moment, she could be used as a liner jock.

What do you guys think? Please don't forget to comment.

Thanks for reading!

Denise will be locked up in the computer, and unable to do any of the things that a human can.

It's just another "skin" on a software interface..

Might amuse a few people for a while, but in order to be effective there to be meaningful interfaces for the software
to use. For instance, if there's a water sensor on the floor, Denise can notice this, "scan" the "studio" with the webcam, compare a with a shot of a "known good" studio view, and decide that the floor really isn't supposed to have such great reflections, and that must be a flood.

So Denise calls the plumber and requests an emergency call.

When the plumber arrives, Denise unlocks the door and leads the plumber to the problem....

There's a lot of forethought that has to go into making just this ONE scenario work.

She can't touch up the tuning on a phasor or sweep snow out of the sat dish, or make an excuse for someone else in the station.

I see where you are going with your response Tom. I never said she would take over humans entirely, it is more than obvious she could not do everything. However loading her up with random music related news, liners, and maybe some small opinions to make her come off as a little more human I am confident she could pull off an airshift. The only true hurdle to overcome would be notifying her when a song is ending and therefore realizing that a talk break would begin and when it would end.

Thanks for reading Mr. Wells

Could artificially intelligent posters take over this board?

would you really want that? :( Personality to me is Radio. I and many others want to talk to a Human, when I call to order something, I do not want to push button, I wait for a Human to answer. I like the old days, where you can be friends with the DJ and people who answered the phones and also love to hear about their families and listen to their stories. I can listen to a ipod or a voice track thing, its not the same. I listen to Cousin Brucie, wed and sat and I feel as he is talking to many, he is talking to me :) If I can I try and call him, not easy but he knows I listen. I don't have to be on the radio, I do not call for that. A software answering the phone, NO WAY!! Thats the way I feel

It is not that I want that or fear it happening, I was simply stating that the option would be there if some radio company took a leap of faith and attempted it.

I did not think you really wanted that, it would be terrible is someone tried it and liked it, liked they tried Jack and thought that would work, I did not listen. I hated it. I bought Sirius right after that happened. I was so happy to Hear Cousin B and I still tune in. He plays the music I love and he loves his Fans. The Best thing he ever did, was to move on there :) He sounds so HAPPY :)

I will go on to say it is almost SCARY how easily and inexpensive on air jocks could potentially be replaced.

I have been avoiding opening up this thread and reading it, but curiosity finally got the best of me.

First, my dyslexia was kicking me around the room. I read the words ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE into the title. Having this tangential love affair with computers, I think I have some concept of what that term means to computer nerds. I opened up the thread finally and started reading. THIS DOES NOT COMPUTE!

Then I read correctly the term used: ARTIFICIALLY INTELLIGENT.

So we would have programming that is not intelligent, but programming that pretends to be intelligent. Smells like it is intelligent when it is not. Sounds like it is intelligent when it is not.

Isn't that what we have on the radio today in far too many cases: human beings that pretend to be intelligent when they are not?

I once heard a country music comedian ponder the issue: "I was grocery shopping the other day. I went to buy some lemon juice to drink and it was made with artificial lemon flavor. I went to buy some furniture polish and it was made with real lemons. Something is wrong with this picture."

The few times that jocks at stations like WCBS-FM speak per hour, artificially intelligent jocks could do the same job equally well. Also, no artificially intelligent jocks wear a toupee like Cousin Brucie so they would be much better at artificially intelligent personal appearances.

artificall intelegent jocks would have the same effect on radio as voicetracking if not worse. taking the heart out of radio.

I agree. I never said that I wanted this but this is certainly a possibility if a radio company wanted to shave some dollars off the annual budget.

In other words, a silicon-based liner card reader?

Probably possible now, and maybe already in use on stations in the Clear Channel, Cumulus and Citadel chains.

Meanwhile some of the talk shows being nationally syndicated today repeat the same rants so often, shows like Hannity and maybe even Limbaugh that claim to be live could actually be edited voice tracks of shows done years ago. For all we know, Limbaugh could have died years ago--but his volce tracks could live on for decades to come and not very many will be able to tell the difference...

In the world of religious broadcasting, they kept playing tapes of Lester Roloff for at least 25 years after his death. The may STILL be running for all I know.

Scary isn't it? To be realistic, does anyone seriously seeing any radio companies attempting this if it was proved to work?

If you get a chance take a listen to the sequel to the Howard Hoffman / Pete Salant radio parody of "Nine!". Their "Ninety-Nine!" spoof pretty much hits the mark regarding all formats being homogenized and created by a computer for cookie-cutter drop-in use.

Sadly much of radio today lacks the creativity of days gone by and it would probably wouldn't be too difficult to synthesize a decent product using a computer.

The answer to this basic question is yes. Be is Bonneville reels, cart carousels, Audisk, ENCO, a computer can always replace a person.

That said, I don't see how further computerization can really save much more money to make it worth the headache. Full-time jocks are paid less now than ever when you adjust for inflation and most part timers are paid at or near minimum wage even in good medium sized markets.

How much more money are you really going to save to waste time fiddling with the latest and greatest computer?

The automation question always ends up like the discussion of the kitchen device 50% full of liquid: "Is the glass half full or is the glass half empty. Depends on whether you are a stinkin' pessimist or a bloomin' optimist.

When I bailed out of broadcasting I ended up becoming a computer savvy dude in other lines of work. When a friend who owned a small business would ask me if he/she should computerize, here was my standard answer:
First assume that the cost of owning and operating a computer will be roughly equal to the cost of doing the financial records by hand. (The sales pitch of the era was how much the computer would save.) Here is why you SHOULD computerize. (1) you will gain discipline. Employees cannot complete a transaction until they fill in all the blanks. (employees tend to leave blanks in manual paper forms thinking they will come back later and complete them, but they never do. (2) You will end up with collected data that you can analyze. (It takes cast iron will to go back through manual records and create statistics to use in making business decisions.

Transfer that to radio programming: (1) Minimum wage people have nothing to lose by not following the discipline you ask of them. After all, their next job will pay just as well if you are paying minimum wage. Thus you will get random crap for programming. They know good performance and creativity is not going to gain them a pay increase if your business plan is to never pay more than minimum wage. (2) A well thought out computerization of programming CAN BE much more creative than a minimum wage programmer.... assuming you the owner/manager/automater have a creative brain and discipline. (3) Your programming quality and style will have consistent quality every hour, every day rather than good programming this shift, yuk programming the next shift, and bat-crap the next day.

I you as the owner/manager/programmer do not have a "love affair" with the concept of computers, your automated programming will sound like bat-crap..... every hour.... every day. But a little bit of genius can go a long way.
