Could Boston have 2 stations switching to all Christmas this year?

And you know what? They don't care. For everyone like you that stops listening....2 more come to the Christmas format.

Maybe even three!

Via @bostonradio on twitter, first song in WMJX's 37 days of Christmas was Have a Holly Jolly Christmas. Mix 104.1 has not changed.

Well this is a shock from out of the blue.
November 18th is much too early for Christmas music.
I will be taking 106.7 off my presets and I might not put them back in come Dec 26 !

Any Cape station flip yet ?

See above comment: "They don't care. For everyone like you that stops listening....2 more come to the Christmas format.!" and "Maybe even three!"

I usually don't care about all the discussion of Christmas formats...but I thought I would make a couple of comments.

While it might be for you, I think Magic and other stations around the country have found that it is not too early.

It shouldn't be a "shock from out of the blue"...because this is exactly when they flipped last year....the weekend leading into Thanksgiving week...people are traveling, starting cooking, food shopping, and start thinking about Christmas shopping/Black Friday.

It also shouldn't shock you since there was a couple of years that Boston had TWO stations flip to Christmas on November 9th!

This is quite normal nowadays...and the ratings show it. And I don't know who makes the decisions at Magic...but they are not dumb people.

What stations typically flip on the Cape anyways? I've heard Cool 102, Easy 99.1, 99.9, Frank (who would think an Adult Hits station would flip... that was last year) and 104.7 all playing 24/7 XMas at one time or another, but only two of those are yearly occurances to my knowledge, 99.1 on the 13th and 99.9 on the 23rd at noon.

Getting Sirius XM over a year ago is the best decision I ever made for radio in the car, being one of the listeners local commercial music radio could care less about. For listeners like me who are not in the target demo, the music variety is extremely repetitive and boring. It gets even worse when stations go non-stop Christmas for a month or more earlier. I notice more offices and businesses are using Sirius XM for their background music. Commercial music radio variety has not improved, so they probably do not care about who is listening satellite radio. For local news and talk I listen to 1030 WBZ and 630 WPRO. However, one commercial music station stands out. Easy 99.1 WPLM. It's amazing how Plymouth Rock Broadcasting runs this station. What is their secret to keeping this 50,000 watt powerhouse going strong, having the best variety of music in the area, and live local DJs (except Delilah)?

Uhhhh......really?

Yeah......really. How does Plymouth Rock Broadcasting do it? The costs must be astronomical keeping Easy 99.1 independent and sounding as great as it does with the amazing variety of 60's to current music and mostly live in studio DJs. The best commercial music station, in my opinion, is not in Boston, Providence, Worcester, or Cape Cod, but in Plymouth. When I am not listening to satellite, this is the one I listen to for music. I know Easy 99.1 will have their 12 days of Christmas. I don't listen to non-stop Christmas music, but even their Christmas music variety is better than other local stations. By the way, I am not Lauro, Jerome Calvin, or Rapking (Real Deal Ed Beal). I used to be RadioJay1. I often agreed with them and others about the lack of certain kinds of music on local radio, but maybe now they have Sirius XM also. If not, I would definitely recommend it.

When I was getting my new company car this year there were 2 things I insisted on, 3R3 Barelona Red as the color, and it had t have Siruis/XM.
I agree it is a must have.

Now how does Plymouth Rock Broadcasting do it?

( full disclosure I have a good friend that is on air there, and was offered an on air position there myself that I had to decline)

They have low overhead. The studio/transmitter facility is functional, but it is no Taj Mahal
They own the land and building.
The AM side revenue helps reduce the costs.
(the transmitter room there is like walking into 1958 again)

They have people that can sell inventory to the locals, you are not hearing boner pill ads on WPLM. Chris Stevens could sell sand to the Arabs.

They are locally focused, they don't try to be a "Boston" station, even though I can get them here in Southern NH.

They have a formula that works. It has been tweaked here and there to keep with the times, they are adjusting as needed to stay relevant.

They have an absolutely delightful mid day hostess.... ( I'm not biased lol)

My gripe: Delilah. There are other stations in the same area playing that train wreck, I don't know what sort of ratings she pulls or revenue, but WPLM is paying a Board Op to be there, they could just as easily put a local product on....

With their 50,000 big ones, they can be heard throughout the entirety of the Boston, Providence, Cape Cod and NBFR markets, and into the Worcester, Manchester, PDR and New London ones as well. It's all live and local, and while their slogan "the most music, the most variety" is very overused by AC and Hot AC stations alike, this station has a deep musical library stretching from the 1950s to today. This station blows off the competition, in my opinion at least.

What stations do you think will flip tomorrow? And yeah, I'm guessing all the AC stations that haven't flipped already will flip tonight, and Hot ACs may do earlier than normal tomorrow.

Do any CHRs flip to wall-to-wall Christmas on Christmas?

WRKO has Big 68 oldies on Saturday nights with Jeff Lawrence. They are running promos saying the show tonight, Christmas Eve,will be a Christmas party with seasonal favorites.
