I have noticed the constant small slip in WRFF the last few ratings, at the same time I have heard many songs played on WRFF also on WIOQ and WISX, especially on WISX. WRFF is way too light on Alternative music, they have to lean harder and dig back to the punk 70's like they did years ago. The Sex Pistols, Flys, Screaming Trees, SevenMaryThree, Papa Roach and this brand of music has left their playlist, which was a big staple 6 years ago when they were brand new. Why would CC have WIOQ and WISX tapping in on WRFF's brand of music and making WRFF light on Alternative. If it was working OK but it looks like these two stations are stealing their sister stations listeners. On another note, I was told by Mr. Bill Weston that WMMR HD-2 will be revamping early next year probably to Hard Alternative and unloading that tiresome Live Archives format, if anyone is into HD this might be the place to go.

What they should do is either move 1045 into a harded edged sound or get the Alternative Hits away from the Q and Mix. Overlapping the same artists and music can hurt all three stations. WRFF is their money maker so how does Standards 106 or Hard Rock 106 sound.
 
Standards sounds like a nonstarter.

But where is the problem with some degree of overlap? That's the way people tend to listen, isn't it? They split time among some handful of stations, some of which might well overlap. If the hit music audience wants to hear a song that also fits the rock station and the hot AC station, you play it across the board.
 
Couldn't agree more with this thread. Half the time it's hard to listen to 104.5 because it just sounds like the pop crap of Q overflowed onto the 104.5 stream (though this is probably more of the other way around, as the banjo-pop slowly encroaches on the hip-pop Q has been known for since the mid 2000's)

As much as I'd love a standards FM (and I'm 22!) I think it would make more sense for 104.5 to just trend harder, especially with WYSP gone (technically gone sine 2005, let's not mention that "rock you grew up with" BS).

Then again, would that clash with their female lean? It could send ratings down even further...

This is no different from other times in Alternative history when songs crossed over to Pop... such as No Doubt, Goo Goo Dolls etc. Right now, there is a higher crossover potential for Alternative songs, such as Lorde, Avicii, Bastille, Capitol Cities, Imagine Dragons etc.

Who cares if the sound is female friendly. It's win-win for the CC Cluster. The song breaks and builds on 104.5, becomes familiar, and then crosses over to Q and Mix. Q and Mix get the benefit of familiar songs, 104.5 gets both male and female listeners.

Also, 104.5 is not CC's "Moneymaker" but they are steady, and as they are usually #1 or 2 with Persons 18-34, they are definitely not hurting.
 
I wonder if Clear channel could flip 106.1 to Country they are syndicating Bobby bones into different markets
and i think they are getting rights to after midnight So well see what Happens in the new year id hate to see mix 106 go they sound good now

I doubt that would ever happen, but that would be awesome. As a country-listener, I can't listen to it here. WXTU's playlist doesn't work for me after spending 4 years in Upstate NY for college...not to mention all the commercials they have. I usually stream WSIX out of Nashville on iHeartRadio for country, especially in the morning for the Bobby Bones Show.
 
There's some good points and some stupidity in this thread. The overlap may or not be the influence in the numbers, but it's certainly possible. Take a look at the station by itself though. Undoubtedly it goes through spurts over time where it trends harder for a bit and then softer. A few books ago WRFF was rivaling MMR in top line numbers, no coincidence I think most would say the playlist was little harder then. Now that it's certainly softer/poppier they seem to be off a bit. You think they would have noticed this awhile ago. As it tends to, eventually it will swing the other way again.
 
There is no way Mix flips to Country, or anything. I can guarantee Mix handily outbills 104.5, so Radio would be the one to flip. Not that it would, because it also earns its keep.

On the topic of playlist, I don't think the lighter stuff is the problem. It's the air-tight playlist. A few years ago, they played plenty of stuff that wasn't top 20 on the national charts. I first heard Of Monsters and Men, Gotye, and Fun. on 104. Now they don't play much outside of the top 20.
