Could Dance Be Coming to Philly?

nd2023

Banned
This evening, I heard Axel F's Crazy Frog on Wired 96.5. This station doesn't even play the dance version of DHT's Listen To Your Heart. Beasley put a dance station on the secondary IBOC channel of Power 96.5 in Miami. WRDW has a license for HD radio, though I don't hear IBOC hash yet. Maybe Beasley could put the same dance station in Philly (they can even use the same imaging since both stations are on 96.5.)

The Miami dance station streams online at http://tuner1.dc1.sonixtream.com/playlists/power96-2/power96-2WPOWHD2.asx
______________

That's sad. The fact that Q102 is now being beaten to dance hits by their rhythmic competitor shows you how far they've fallen. Yeah it's a novelty hit, but it's doing pretty well on CHR and getting huge phones in every market it's played in. Why let Wired own this reaction record?

Also sad. I was driving through rural western PA last weekend and heard one of the dance versions of DHT on every single CHR I tuned in to. If markets with more cows than people (Johnstown PA, Altoona PA, St. Marys PA, Chambersburg PA) are playing the dance version, why is a major market station like Wired or Q102 still holding on to the ballad?

I was thinking this too before WPOW-HD2 launched, but now it seems like the station is very underground-oriented. That would not work in Philly.

"Footloose"?

Yep...you can set your watch by it; it's another "Philly-needs-a-dance-station" post.

Thanks for not disappointing. :)

LOL, good one!

But, that's the only way Philly will get a dance station...is by one offering a seperate signal on IBOC, otherwise...fugedaboudit!!!
______________

Re: "Footloose"?

That'd be a great name for a dance radio pirate station in Philly. "The only station in Philly that dares to dance...Footloose radio!"

We're not discussing the transmitter signals of WPHT and WPEN or how WOGL shouldnt go Jack because of its ratings???? You mean there are other things to discuss???!!!!

Think about your question, then think about some of the possible answers. The reasoning behind staying with the unplugged version should come to your mind fairly easily, my friend. I would come flat out and say it, but then AbacoDream will open his mouth and turn it into a flame fest against me.. Which would accomplish nothing for the discussion.

But it's a fairly obvious answer, if you give it just a minute or so worth of thought. :)

By the way... Crazy Frog...

I thought it would NEVER turn into a viable radio record in the U.S. (it was a #1 in the UK, if I'm not mistaken), but I was wrong. I'm on it here in Southern Illinois, 30x / week and our phone reaction has been huge across all demos. Is it a novelty hit? Sure. But it's a hit and worth playing, even if only for a few weeks to a couple months (maximum).

I think Q is moving away from the teens, where there is absolutely no-dough other than Pepsi, and back to the w18-49 pot full of gold at the end of the rainbow...where Q is traditionally dominant.

Wired is stuck in a terrible audience comp of 60% urban/hispanic rut...combine that with being predominantly teen and thus you will never get a single general market dollar. Wired could be tied with The Beat as being the least significant FM station in the Philadelphia Metro. There is not a single reason in my mind to buy either station other than to get a cheep deal.

So, with that, I would speculate that Wired will be the one to change, not Q. I think in the Fall the great Wired experiment will be 2 years old, and after throwing good money after bad at it, it may be time for the Beasleys to cut their losses and try something new.

Maybe Tired 96.5 - music for insomniacs?

Because it's testing well and doesn't have high burn scores, I'm guessing.

Still, the song brings the station to a screeching halt 117 times a week. Other stations are having success by playing both versions (Z100 comes to mind). It solves the problem of playing the slowest possible ballad every hour and a half. Both versions are nationally-known hits at this point.

Correct. It came from the UK. Believe it or not, the song was actually developed as a ringtone.. Just some useless tidbits folks.

WHTZ here in New York seems to play both versions, yet the dance version is heard less and less.
Not sure about WBLI, but the few times I could get them, in they were playing the dance version.

I wouldn't call that sad. Rhythmic was originally supposed to include dance. It's just here recently (the last few years) that most rhythmics are basically urbans. No, I would call that a rhythmic doing what it was originally supposed to do.

On the flip side of what I said above, the ballad is the one getting the most reaction. We started playing that version at my station in Fort Wayne on Friday and we've already logged 10 or so requests for it! Trust me, it's a much bigger hit than the dance version.

I first heard this song on the Drudge Report radio show over a month ago. Matt was having fun with it, he was surprised it knocked Coldplay off #1 in the UK.

If bored, come to the NY board

Tired of the same old posts? Come on up to the New York board!

Where you can hear other, different, tired rants such as:

(1) Why won't anyone put a country station on in NYC?

(2) KTU sucks! And it's time to kill it...or, what is going on at WNEW? Why don't they try (choose favorite candidate format)

(3) Jack completely sucks!

OK, I admit to taking part in some of these discussions, and maybe even beating a dead horse once or twice. Whatever, posts can always be ignored. Like this one!

Later, Philly radio fans!

You left one out,"When will New York get an Oldies station to replace CBS-FM."
