Could first run syndication work again?

I don't think so, even if My Net and CW shut down. Most of the producers of these shows moved to cable. First run syndicated shows did not have consistent time slots across the country like a cable broadcast network does now. A lot of stations think they need to build a brand around a network instead of creating a local identity

Tribune dropped the network branding on WPIX in NYC and WTXX (now WCCT-TV) in Hartford. WPIX was CW 11 and WTXX was CW 20. WPIX became "PIX 11". WTXX became "TXX" now they're called "The CT". And I think other Tribune owned CW affiliates have done the same thing. Not sure about WPHL in Philly since they're affiliated with My Network TV rather than CW.

WPHL is still going by the "My PHL 17" name - at least they were as recent as New Year's Day, when I saw their on-air bug become animated with the capital "P" from the Phillies logo.

That may not mean much. KTVU in the Bay Area is "Fox 2" when they're running Fox network programming or Fox promos, but are otherwise "KTVU, Channel 2" - just like the old days.

Can My Network TV affiliates drop the branding or is it a requirement like Fox?

Could they be trying to distance themselves from Fox News Channels in liberal San Fran?

If you had a quality show that viewers were willing to seek out on local syndication partners, why not?
Star Trek TNG comes to mind as a good example, though it was quite expensive to produce. Whether
anyone would be willing to take such a risk in the current environment is the key question.

I don't think the My Network TV branding is a requirement because WPME in Portland, Maine used to be known as My TV WPME but in Fall 2009 it began to be known as Discover Maine on WPME without a My TV logo on screen. But I noticed sometime in 2010 that they had put a small My TV logo on screen. Here's what it looks like: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/64/WPME35.png. Of the 3 tvs we have only one is HD meaning the other two are 4:3 aspect ratio which cuts off the My TV part.

Looking on Wikipedia's My Network TV affiliate list I found 9 other My Network TV affiliate that doesn't use the My TV branding KZJO in Seattle Washington. It is known as JOEtv. WBFS in Miami, Florida is known as TV 33. KPDX in Portland, Oregon is known as PDX TV. KAUT in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma is known as OK43. KARZ in Little Rock Arkansas is known as Z42. KFVE in Honolulu, Hawaii is known as K5. KCWX in San Antonio, Texas is known as KCWX. WSTR in Cincinnati, Ohio is known as Star 94 (uses the blue logo that My TV has but not the My branding style). KRBK in Springfield, Missouri is known as KRBK.

You mean, Star 64, right? Perhaps you've been hanging around the Atlanta board (where there is a station known as "Star 94") too often... ;)

Agreed.
That would be the key: getting the show enough buzz to make people want to see it, and then having enough outlets for them to see it on. It would require more than just someone producing it, someone else would have to want to show it, and people would have to want to watch it.
If they use the internet to get the buzz, like everyone does these days, they're more likely to just use the internet to show it to everyone. At least it seems like it to me.

Yes that's what I meant. I accidentally hit 9 since it is one key above 6 on the laptop keyboard with built-in numberpad.

It's actually just "PHL 17" now, they dropped the "my" a few months back (though their website remains myPHL17.com)

My is dropped, but the logo still has the MyNetwork background. To me, it's still too much in there for there to be any real difference.

Just a side note, doesn't Michael Savage (Michael Alan Weiner) broadcast his right wing hate show from San Francisco?

Probably no.due to DVD. I have notice most of all of the old tv shows are on DVD.First run shows like the format like ET,Access Hollywood and Extra might do ok.but we allready have these.A true good nightly or weekly Music magazine show like the old mtv news . Kurt Loder and Crook and Chase from TNN can host the show,in depth interviews ,artists spotlight. a performance segment...New [fresh] quick paced game shows probably do good as long the game keep the viewer from walking away or changing the channel and its not a copy from the game show that are on tv now.

One of the obvious challenges being that in a 500 channel universe, where people spend less of their time on local
stations, you have far less opportunity to see promos for a good show that is being syndicated to them. I suppose an aggressive campaign using billboards, online ads or something to direct you to the proper channel would be needed,
along with very heavy promotion during local newscasts.
