Could Funny 99.1 be in our future

Cumulus is having a big success with its newly launched 24/7 comedy radio station in Kansas City. That station is translator that rebroadcasts an HD sub channel just like they do with 99X here. If all comedy proves itself then one of cumulus' 3 translators will get the format.

My wish....The Fan moves to 97.9, 99x moves to 99.1 to better match its moniker and all comedy shows up to the 93.7 signal. I get 97.9 clear in stockbridge but 93.7 gets beat up by the 93.7 in macon...i enjoy the fan the most

Not sure if they are ready to try in in ATL but you can bet if the numbers continue to be there in KC that they will give it a go elsewhere...and others will too!

Hmmm.... another original idea stolen from satellite. Props to them for at least trying it.

Re: Could Funny 99.1 be in our future

The format may probably work, but the 99.1 frequency isn't going to work in most of the ATL metro.

Exactly. They were lucky with 97.9 - very little interfence across the metro. 93.7 wasn't so lucky, with Macon trumping in from time to time. 99.1 is going to be the ugly stepchild who is constantly trampled on by the 100 kW signal of WDEN.

WDEN comes in decent south of I-20 (and especially south of the bottom end perimeter), and can be DXed on a good day north of I-20. When the DXing is good (see the other thread), watch out.

The 102.9 translator has the same problem with WVRK 102.9 in Columbus, and a lesser extent with WDUN-FM north of Gainesville. Unless you are close enough to the 102.9 translator, you're in a sandwich of interference with co-channel WDUN-FM from the NE and WVRK from the SW.

WDEN 99.1 is quite listenable out in the Stone Mtn./Lilburn area off of US 78 where I live, and a good chunk of Gwinnett.

Re: Could Funny 99.1 be in our future

WVRK is a full 100k class C, and WDEN is a 100k C1.

Don't mean to sound dumb, but what's the difference in a C vs a C1? I know both have an ERP of 100K watts and both piggyback off of TV towers that are over 1,000 feet tall!!

Not shown in the above table are minimum tower heights. Many full class C's got downgraded to C0 when class C0 was introduced, and a new, higher minimum height imposed for class C.

For reference, the only full class C's in the ATL metro are WSRV and WYAY, both rather far out. Flight patterns for ATL limit tower height closer in.

Not much. Here is the is the FCC's chart.

http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/fmclasses.html

IIRC there were are some old C's that are grandfathered that are really C0's. Example:

http://www.radio-locator.com/info/KLNO-FM

True C's get a little extra "space" verses the C0's.
