Could I be an MD?

Alright, I enjoy playing armchair P/MD...and after looking at some of the BAD sample hours on here, I wondered how I could do. Don't work in radio, so I'm expecting to be totally panned. Let's see what I could do if I were in charge of the music logs for a CHR...this isn't based on personal taste or anything like that, BTW.

This particular 50 song in midday?

Flip Mariah and 50..

50 into Mr. Brightside... into Rihanna... into Crossfade.

Unfamiliar song to lead your hour? If anything, put Nina Sky there as a recurrent, then into 3 Doors Down and Black Eyed Peas... then bring Howie Day up and play him out of BEP into the break.

Very slow set, from the Fugees to Rob Thomas... You need something there, but I can't quite put my finger on it. If you bring Missy and Ciara down from the first sweep of the hour... hmm... maybe this?

Gwen
Jesse
Missy / Ciara
Fat Joe / Nelly
Fugees
Rob Thomas

Just my thoughts on that sweep..

Not especially sure I like this... Song selection isn't bad, but I'd go:

Ciara / Ludacris
Natalie
Gavin DeGraw
Mariah
Weezer

There's something I don't understand about top of the hours. If it's coming out of another song (in this case, Pimpin' All Over The World), what difference does it make? I don't think just because you run a legal ID you need to play a power, it's not like the average listener is going to know the difference or tune out.

Thanks man! Like I said, I have zero experience, so I'm pretty much just using what I've learned from talking to radio people and just listening to figure out how to schedule music. A few years ago, if you asked me to put together a sample hour, I probably would have given you DJ Encore into Finger Eleven into Missy/Ciara into Weezer into Kelly Clarkson, LOL. Well, a few of those might not have been around a few years ago, but you get my point...

BTW Aaron, I surfed by your website and heard that prank call you did to your friend in PA with your "sexy voice intern", that was some funny ish...

Any other comments are welcome!

Again, this is just a matter of my personal preference as a programmer, but you have two songs in a row that are unfamiliar... Granted, the D.H.T. record is not "new" to most of us, but to the younger end CHR listener that isn'd old enough to remember the Roxette version, "Listen to Your Heart" is a totally new thing to them... Thus, you'd want to put something with more familiarity (Scars) between it and another song with a very low familiarity (Cool).

Ah, but you still might want to make the flip with Mariah, so that you don't have two rap titles in a row... Even with Sugar becoming as mainstream as it has, you'd still want a more poppy record between it and Outta Control.

Your personal preference, okay. I still say there are better, but this is your log, not mine.

> 1:00 Missy Elliot f/ Ciara - Lose Control
> 1:04 Nina Sky - Move Ya Body

True... All right, then let me make the point about familiarity again.. Luda / Bobby is new... Lose Control is new... As I said above with D.H.T. and Gwen "Cool," you'd want something more familiar between the two new records. Let me suggest this:

(End of the previous hour)
Ludacris / Bobby Valentino

(Top of new hour)
Nina Sky
3 Doors Down
Missy Elliott / Ciara
Black Eyed Peas

Although, an issue I would have with that sweep would be the two "dance" pop records (BEP and Missy) being next to each other... A mellow gold, perhaps an Aaliyah (Are You That Somebody or Try Again) or an Usher (U Got It Bad or You Make Me Wanna) would be a good song to break that up, if you chose to do so.

LMAO, thanks... Fee has a good voice, she's actually one of our part-timers. If I had a chance to do a consistent show with her, I think we'd do really well. Did you listen to the station online at all? I'd be interested to hear what you've got to say about it...

That makes sense. If the hour is starting off coming out of a commercial break, then yeah, I could understand wanting a power or a heavy recurrent in there. But I didn't really notice the Luda / Bobby into the Missy as being two unfamiliars in a row.

I listened for a little bit yesterday afternoon.

Honestly, that does NOT sound like Market 233 radio. Trust me, I've heard radio in Top 100 markets that was boring, all over the place, badly done... you name the negative adjective. WVZA has got a lot of energy and a big-market feel. I haven't heard your competition (WCIL) so I don't know what they're like compared to you, but your station sounds very solid.

The music selection wasn't reminiscent of certain small-market stations that are either far too conservative or totally unfocused, playing stiff after stiff. As a matter of fact, I heard a good amount of rhythmic-leaning material, including some recurrents and golds that you don't often hear on CHR radio today. I loved the music selection, personally. It was fresh and different, and right up my alley. But does that type of stuff do well in Marion-Carbondale-Southern IL? Also, the imaging was fast, well-done, and helps give the station a big signature CHR sound.

The Throwback 5@5 is an idea I like. I thought the golds were good, but like I said, some of them were a little...unique, I guess you could say. (e.g. Joe f/ Mystikal - Stutter, Trick Daddy - Take It To Da House...) That type of stuff does well with your audience, I presume? Either way, props for the track selections... but a few other thoughts about the feature.

One, is this something you do every day, or just on Friday's? Either way, you do it during the 5PM hour, which is drive time. Wouldn't it make more sense to do it in a different hour? I say this because while people are making the commute, they'd probably want to hear the current hits they're feeling ("Behind These Hazel Eyes", "We Belong Together", "Sugar", etc.) and the songs that your station is characterized by. Just a thought. Also, as someone who tuned in in the middle of the countdown, I was a bit confused. You spread the songs out, and suddenly I heard song number 5, then no others. I thought it was a countdown, but the gold had been surrounded by other currents. Once I figured out that you distributed them throughout the hour, it made sense that you didn't want to play 5 golds in a row, but as a first-time listener, I was a little confused.

I haven't heard your night girl or mid-days, but I have heard an aircheck of you and it sounded good. How does Valentine do in the morning? Anyway, Kiss sounded great. Keep up the good work.

Any other comments or anything of that nature on my "log" are welcome.

You may want to flip "Cool" to "Hollaback Girl".

Trick Daddy should be flipped to a pop track, and make sure "Cold" is the rock version. I'm not a fan of two rock tracks than Rihanna, you may want to make it like this:

Outta Control
We Belong Together
Switch
I See Right Through To You (like what ATyler said, there are better recurrents and golds than this)
Pon De Replay
Other Pop Track (maybe "These Words")
These Boots Are Made For Walkin'
Mr. Brightside
Cold
