Could it be? IBOC gone on WBZ?!!!

For now at least, YES! I was actually able to listen to KDKA and 1010/WINS without that IBOC slop last night. They both sounded great with 'BZ not jamming them with IBOC! In turn, 'BZ sounded quite improved without the IBOC sidebands. Now, if only 'BZ could remove that nasty old brick-wall filter and return to a more broadband state (maybe C-QUAM, as well) they would sound great as well! The AM IBOC experiment is turning into a disaster, nationwide. Put it out of its' misery, once and for all.

On Friday during arond 6pm their transmitter was up and down and it sounded like they were running at lower power at times (maybe they kept switching between transmitters).

The IBOC was off (I could pickup up KDKA).

Of course, this was before I started my boycott of them due to their recent idiotic programming changes.....

Hope it's gone for good! IBOC on AM (and FM)... what a disaster! WE all knew it was a turkey in the first place.

Is it due to the new CheapBS mini-network overnight show on WBZ/KDKA
(plus KMOX/WCCO) where they don't want the two O&Os slinging I-CRAP
hash all over each other on 1020 and 1030?

Keep the IBOC off FOREVER! What a technical disaster! Anyway, the old xmtr. had stereo. Maybe that one is on. I have 3 A.M. stereo radios but none detect the pilot.

WBZ's hash is back, must've come back on sometime this afternoon.

Oh well...... the hash is back :'( . No more KDKA. Damn... (just when 'BZ was starting to sound a little better without the hiss).

Don't go too far into PA or KDKAs hiss will get you! So will KYW's. Now that I am out near Chicago, I am disappointed to find that WHO's hiss often interferes with WBZ. Until nightime IBOC is banished to the dustbin of history, we'll all have to suffer this.

Not that any of it ever decodes on the hd system that I got from Best Buy! Not even locals.

As a former Pittsburgh resident, I loved listening to KD also but why would anyone bother now. It looks like CBS will be cloning all of them during the late night/overnight hours so I'll be able to listen to WBZ and hear the same programming as KD. :(

Unfortunately the AM Stereo generator was removed from the backup. The HD will unfortunately be back on soon.

I could well be wrong, but I think the C-QUAM AM Stereo generators were never at the "tertiary" backup system in Allston; they were only on the "primary" and "secondary" systems out in Hull. The "secondary" still has it, AFAIK...but WBZ wasn't on the "secondary" because the problem was with their STL out to Hull (so I've heard). I remember a few years ago WBZ had to go on the secondary for a couple of days and everyone reported that their AM Stereo lights were glowing for 1030, although the programming was nevertheless in mono (d'oh).

Speaking of which, AFAIK WBZ's HD signal is also mono content, even though HD-AM is inherently stereo. Can anyone confirm the mono content?

That's almost correct. I believe the current backup in Hull was once the primary, and this is the one that did have AM stereo. The stereo generator was removed from this Hull backup though, within the past few years.

Actually the commercials are in stereo when listening in HD.

It does seem to me that the HD signal more intense and wider than it was before last week. I had been able to try to listen to notch out the WBZ-HD carrier. Now it's nearly impossible. Even 1010/WINS is being jammed even moreso. Their analog really sounds worse, along with the hiss (even center channel). I can't listen to it with the hiss always there. How I miss the broadband stereo sound of WBZ, especially before NRSC. That signal sounded just as good as FM Stereo. Now it sounds like a 3000 Hz telco line. On HD, it sounds like a lot of artificial highs. AM was never meant for IBOC.
