Could it be - Urban JACK format?

I just read a post on the NYC Board here on Radio-Info and something popped in my head. I have been a Philly resident my entire 30 years of existence. I grew up listening to old school hip hop/r&B in the late 80's and 90's. Would a JACK type urban format work in philly? Of course I think it would have to be a hybrid of old philly stations like Power 99 back in the day, Q102 from the 90's (with freestyle and hip hop and dance music), and (GASP!) Jammin' Gold.

The person on the NYC Board said there are stations that our parents can hear with their music from "growing up", why is it that music from late 80's and early 90's that isn't rock or pop gets pushed aside? i would love everyone's opinion on this.

OH MY GOD! NOT ANOTHER RAP STATION! I CANT HEAR NO SKYNYRD WHY THE HECK SHOULD WE GETS SOME MORE A DAT NO GOOD RAP! All I ever hear is that you guys want a dance station or spanish station! We need more unsuccessful rock stations! Where are ROCKERS! Supposed to go! MMR isnt rock enough neither is MGK and YSP only has music part time WHAT AM I TO DO!!!!!!!

*End sarcastic response you're gonna get a hundred times*

Can we can "jammin' oldies?" It would work for a year and then people get sick of it.

In other words, no.

Two reasons why no:

(1) The R&B/Soul/Hip Hop culture is actually more fractured than the Rock culture is. People in the JACK target demographic wouldn't necessarily want today's rap mixed in, and today's gangbangers might not appreciate too much soul from "back in da day."

(2) An urban JACK would end up being called "Jizzle," which is an unfortunate name for a format.

I think everyone missed the point. What i am trying to ask is that why are there all these gold based rock/classic rock/alternative jack type stations, but not an urban type format with the same basis. I mean you have JOSE the spanish language Jack station, why not one geared towards the urban market?

They can call it JAMAL. (j/k). In all seriousness, I'm sure this kind of format is on its way -- if it's not already being tried somewhere. It makes sense to me.
