could it ever happen here??

with the news of WRKS going away and joining forces with WBLS,i'm wondering if a station here in the area would drop a format and carry ESPN programming, now granted weei carries them overnight but at some point wouldn't they want to have all there shows cleared in a big market like Boston???? just some food for thought!

ESPN is probably happy with WEEI as it is. WEEI does want to keep local shows as they are but picture WEEI-FM as the same while the AM side would pick up some daytime ESPN shows (late morning? early afternoon? nighttime? Have Planet Mikey on the FM, ESPN on the AM)
I don't think ESPN would leave WEEI at this point

Boston has more than enough sports stations

Sports on FM was the obvious open format hole in NYC. CBS and ESPN had AM stations in the format already. It was just a matter of time before one of them decided to migrate to FM. ESPN just happened to do it first. Chances are CBS will eventually follow them there and put the Fan on 92.3...Radio Now (CHR). With two local sports stations already on FM here in Boston, that hole is essentially filled. Not the same situation at all.

There hasn't been a lot of success with upstart CHR competitors to heritage outlets in recent years. KAMP/LA has probably done the best, but they still haven't been able to beat KIIS even with a high profile morning show and lots of promotion. The AMP station in Detroit hasn't come close to topping longtime hit station WKQI, and 92.3 Now in New York has been no threat to Z-100 at all. Why would it work here, especially when Kiss 108 has Jam'n flanking them on the rhythmic end? CC will do whatever it takes to swat down any challenge, like they've done in LA, Detroit and New York.

The format hole that's the most glaring in Boston? Believe it or not, is Spanish/Tropical. An all Spanish FM would make a serious dent 6+. Don't know how saleable it would be, but I bet it would do better than a full blown Urban or Urban AC.

I would love to see a station like "Mia 1430am" be on FM. That's like (Mix 104.1/KISS 108 put together in two-but in Spanish)

So whatever happened to all the experts who claimed authoritatively that once WEEI had its product on an FM signal, the AM would go ESPN? Clearly I called that one right.

No major signal is going to flipped to become the third station in the metro under any format.

Don't be so sure. 850 delivering all satellite ESPN programming would be no serious threat to either WEEI or 98.5 ratingswise. If anything, Entercom could sell the local airtime and make a few bucks on it, and ESPN would get a Top 10 clearance for their shows like Mike & Mike, Colin Cowherd, Scott van Pelt, Doug Gottleib and other programming. The fact that conflict games are airing on WRKO instead of 850 sends the signal that Entercom has something planned for 850 eventually. My guess is once Entercom is confident that all their audience has transitioned to 93.7, 850 either gets spun off or goes ESPN.

No it probably means that WEEI-FM and WEEI are listed with Arbitron as a 100% simulcast so that a PPM tuned to either is counted as WEEI. If so they can not put somthing diffrent on either without changing this status.

WEEI currently just has ratings for the FM listed in the public Arbitron info for Boston. Normally complete simulcasts will be listed together (ie WEEI AM & FM.) This leads me to believe any ratings 850 is getting are either not listed publically, are negligible, or both.

Here in Philly, The Fanatic, Greater Media's sports station, runs overnight programming and Mike & Mike on both their AM and FM stations. Their AM splits away to run two hours of Colin Cowherd from 10a-noon, then rejoins the FM for local programming from noon to 11pm most nights. That's a recent development. My guess is WPEN-AM will eventually get more ESPN shows cleared on it. While it's obvious WEEI-FM won't run ESPN outside of overnights, there's no guarantee 850 won't eventually. The AM is not important for 93.7's long term success.
