Could KABC become KNX's sister station?

With Audacy rebranding all their affiliates to Infinity Sports Radio, it makes sense for Kabc to at least clear some shows. Theyre the flagship for a Big 10 school now. That’s pretty huge to want to capitalize on that. having some sports programming will draw in more listeners than what’s on Kabc now
Doubtful

As I'm pretty sure David and BigA have explained before, college sports doesn't air often enough to really affect ratings, and L.A.'s a marginal sports town even when it comes to the pros.

Hard to prove that theory. KABC is a no-show in the February PPMs. So's KSPN. The only English-language sports station in L.A. that does show up in the ratings is KLAC, with an 0.7.

I know KSPN (Good Karma) doesn't subscribe to Nielsen Audio;
I'm pretty sure that KABC (Cumulus) doesn't subscribe.

When KSPN did subscribe, it would bump above a 1.0 share 2-3 times a year (Lakers playoffs; MLB playoffs; Rams playoffs).
KABC had been languishing in the 0.5-1.0 share range.

KLAC has the advantage of being the "Dodgers" station...

Okay. Still makes it impossible to know what they're doing at present, and to prove that any change would necessarily be an improvement.

The problem with KABC is not content, it is signal. Its coverage area is about 75% to 80% ethnic (Black, Asian, Hispanic) or immigrants (Iran, Middle Eastern, Russian, etc.). None of those groups would have much interest in that type of programming.

The station has only partial day and night coverage of the metro survey area, and as LA has plentiful electronic and electrical noise on the AM band, the coverage decreases every year.

But KSPN had a full market powerful signal. KABC does not.

KLAC has the advantage of being the "Dodgers" station...
It also has the advantage of being 5 kw on 570, perhaps the second best fulltime signal in the LA metro (or at least a tie with KNX after the winner, KFI).

I think KABC might end up becoming sports talk known as Infinity Sports Network

I would be surprised if KABC would pick up Los Angeles Angels MLB Baseball, UC Irvine Anteaters Men's Basketball, Las Vegas Raiders NFL Football to air these games.

I said this before: What is being forgotten here is that KABC's signal is not adequate for any kind of format that targets mainly non-Hispanic whites. It covers well areas that areas that are almost totally immigrants, Asians, Hispanics. Those are not "angry white guy" talk listeners... or a bunch of "beer drinking white guys talking about sports".

Why are people thinking about formats for this station that won't work?

There's a cost connected to all those rights. Plus there's the cost of doing the games.

Cumulus syndicates the Infinity Sports Network. But it's a partnership. So they share revenue.

Whereas they own the talk shows they air.
Possibly it will be known as "AM 790 The Score" as a Infinity Sports Network affiliate you'll never know until then

O.K. Is there a canned, "Happy White Guy" format that would work? Are there any English fluent "ethnics" moving about in the basin for advertisers to 'target' as a total group? Whatever. Hey, this is an AM at the end of the first quarter on the Twenty-First Century. Sooner than later it will have to be put down, I suppose. Who will the lucky bag holder be?

BTW, Is George Green still with us? The second program director to grace KABC in it's glorious heyday, near forty years. WOW. Long term- after KFI (talk) is gone, history will judge KABC the better of the two for quality and class and their earnings weren’t too shabby back then either.

Respectfully, are there audience breakdowns for sports formats? from programming the format myself, we’ve had listeners range from Indian-American, to hispanic - in the south. I’ve got a hard time believing younger hispanics, in Los Angeles, who are very active Dodgers and Lakers fans just avoid sports talk. Who would’ve thought a sports format would work on am 830? Which areas does that signal serve? What format could work for KABC? In the days of mobile app streaming, does it matter which areas are served by a signal? while some may not see it, KABC is the flagship for USC. A big 10 school in the same conference with Michigan, who just won the national championship. their basketball team just made a splash hire at head coach. While everyone keeps saying L.A. isn’t Lincoln, Nebraska or Baton Rouge, it’s also not San Francisco where there are two cellar dwellers (Cal and Stanford) in all revenue sports. People actually care about college sports in L.A. Does anyone remember what life was like in L.A. before two NFL teams arrived? Who were we all rooting for? Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, Mark Sanchez and USC. If KABC wants to survive, this is the only option. Hell, someone put me in contact with someone there, I’ll gladly program the station from afar and get more sports rights for them

They should’ve done this a long time ago. I would’ve flipped kabc to sports in 2010. I don’t think Kabc will air all of those teams. I think you know more that what you’re posting. But, let’s hope it comes to fruition

So what about @DavidEduardo's comment.

Just gonna gloss over that, @sonofgod2256 ?

Just a reminder that coming out of their bankruptcy, the intent of the Cumulus equity holders was to exit the NY and LA markets. That's why they sold KLOS. If they had intended to remain in the market, they wouldn't have sold KLOS. It wasn't part of the sale to EMF. Then again, if this merger happens, they would still have had to sell an FM. But all this talk about spending money for sports rights ignores the real goal of Cumulus, which was to sell KABC. If I remember correctly they fired the PD a while ago, and I'm not aware that he's been replaced.

I think he posts here from time to time.
