Could KDKA's localism hurt PGB today?

With everything going on surrounding Big Ben, I did not go to FM news talk 104-7. I went straight to KDKA since I knew they would have live reporters, etc. Meanwhile, 104-7 would continue to run Rush and Hannity as scheduled. I'm listening from Dayton by the way.

I would stick with 1020 AM or 1410 KQV AM or the 2 sports stations 970 WBGG and 1250 WEAE for the latest on the story.
 
It really speaks volumes for both stations: KDKA is still the go-to news station, even though the radio side has exactly one field reporter and the remainder of the sound is TV (and live news stops sometime after 7pm, and none on weekends). That's still better than WPGB, which has radio news sent down the ISDN from Cleveland--with one field reporter as far as I know (and even then, part-time). Additional audio is from WPXI, when available.KQV, for all the crap it gets, does have a full complement of news reporters and anchors. But it doesn't have the KDKA go-to heritage.Too bad no one is interesting to "go-to" KDKA for their non-news programming.
 
What's really sad is that as soon as I heard that Roethlisberger was injured, I hurried home so that I could turn on the television. None of the local radio stations impress me as a good source for breaking news. If there was anything newsworthy going on locally that was either interesting or important, I'd no more turn on a radio than I'd rush to a newstand to buy a newspaper. It's a real shame that radio as a news medium has sunk so low.
 
In my opinion out of all the TV stations in Pittsburgh, KDKA gives the most up to date breaking news. I agree with you Radio Realist that TV stations, especially KDKA have much better coverage of breaking news then radio. KDKA TV did the best coverage out of all the stations on Big Ben's accident. I am also pretty bummed out about the Rothlisberger injury, but ESPN is saying he might be ready for action by the end of training camp. Only one could hope.
 
That does show one clear advantage of the TV-Radio combos that used to dominate. KD TV and Radio can share a ton of resources when it comes to reporters, etc. Radio can handle the breaking side while TV does the follow-up. WTAE used to do a good job of this when they still owned 1250. It usually left 11 on the outside looking in on such stories.

You are correct that KDKA has the capability. It's too bad they don't take advantage of it more often.
 
the true teaming of KD radio and TV news can knock off a competitor.....
the person who mentioned WTAE TV and 1250/WTAE got it right..........

the ultimate cross promotion was when Paul Long did the late afternoon news ( 4pm i believce and maybe 5) pn 1250 WTAE...it was a good newscast and boosted the credibility of both entities.

it's all about setting egos aside........
 
Funny thing is, just 5-6 years ago, when KDKA 1020 still ran with the "90 to 6" moniker, Stacy Smith anchored the 5 and 5.30 news on 1020, much like Long did.

It's also a standard network news thing: the network TV news anchors at ABC and CBS do the 5pm network radio anchor slot every day, as sort of a billboard.

It's funny how much a radio station can go from premier news-source 5 years ago to scraping for sound sources now.

Truthfully, as a radio listener, it wouldn't make much difference to me who was reading the news. As long as the person who was reading the news had a good voice, I wouldn't care if it was an award winning journalist or some booth announcer reading a script.
 
KDKA has a great tradition in Pittsburgh, that's for sure.
If I want news I check out TV. Sorry, but true.
104.7FM has already put a hurting on KDKA and should continue to do so.
PD Jay Bohannon is doing a great job. He took WTAM in Cleveland to #1 12+.
See if he can do it in the Burgh ;D
 
I wouldn't say they would be number 1. The attitude in Pittsburgh is let's protect DVE. I'm sure they would have no problem with #2 though. Haha!
Actually, the Herd said something very interesting this morning. People don't go to TV for news, people go to radio and TV for affirmation.
