Could KOOL-FM Get "Jacked"?

Although it finished the Summer 2005 Arbitrons as the second most popular station in the market (in terms of 12-plus), and has traditionally been one of the top stations in overall listening, could KOOL-FM get "Jacked"??

As far as I know, there is no "Jack"-type format in Phoenix. And KOOL is owned by Infinity, which earlier this year made headlines for it's controversial flip of two long-successful oldies stations, WCBS-FM New York and WJMK-Chicago, to "Jack". Several other Infinity stations have also been flipped to "Jack" in recent months.

On the one hand, Phoenix seems to be a market whose median age is probably higher than the national average and one where oldies should continue to be successful for radio. But I thought there was also major population growth in the area which might be driving the median age younger, closer to the national average.

as for the rest... I still dont see them flipping a hertiage station like KOOL who still frequests the top spot in the books.

I agree. If KOOL flips, we could see a Phoenix rising(No pun intended) from disgruntled listeners.

I think 98-7 The Peak beat them to it...

I wonder if something's going on there. During my drive home from work at 4 PM, there was a loud annoying crash-of-broken-glass sound-effect interruping a couple of songs, including during the Beatles set. It wasn't during every song, though.

Could that be a hint that they're planning on "crashing" the oldies format?

It's the call-cue for a "win a big-screen TV"
contest...an Infinity national contest, BTW,
which probably explains why KOOL may not have
been able to control the placement of the SFX.

Gee, I hope Infinity knows when all their
participating stations' stopsets are...don't
want to have to do any make goods!

Joe, you should have done some homework
before posting this "what-if"...as several
others have already noted in this thread
re KPKX Phoenix ("98-7 The Peak" for those
of you who are not legal ID-inclined) and its
pseudo-Jack format.

I'm tempted to post on the Boston board asking
if WODS could get hi-JACKed (but I won't ;-)

Actually, I can't recall if Boston has a Jack,
real or fake.
Edited by oldiesfan on 11/09/05 02:21 AM.

Speaking of that contest.. every morning on stern they play that stupid SFX during the show when there is ample time to play it during the commercial breaks. I realize its a national contest and times are pre determined but kinda gets annoying day after day

WODS would be unlikely to get JACKed, Boston switched Star 93.7 to MIKE-FM (Jack Format) about 6-8 months ago

They did, and they were doing this format way back b4 anyone had ever heard of Jack. Many agree that they have a better presentation and overall sound than most of the Jack FMs.
Edited by saladdressing on 11/10/05 01:35 AM.

Well for one they are more than just a jukebox, they actually have live djs, wow what a concept LOL I think all the Jack fms are run so cheap.. its clear they are in the format to make a easy buck if they can. So happy we got a really cool station that gives us variety with alot of fun on the radio

No question. The Peak really is a great radio station.
