Could MRS Vultures' Jerry Russell happen to be in hiding?

We haven't even tackled on the drama that continued to unfold. No one really knows where Jerry Russell is hiding and already the stations that he owns may be hanging by a thread (in fact they are). Last I've been through East Texas over a month ago, KZEY was not even visible reception-wise unless they were using KOFY as life support for 690. He abandoned the Pine Bluff stations and three of the Delta stations in Mississippi are running very well without JR's dictation. Looks like we will continue to keep ourselves guessing on this until he finally gets OUT of radio. It's not even his niche` anyway.

Any thoughts?

As far as I know, KZEY hasn't been on the air recently. KOFY ran dead air 24/7 for several months as East Texas Premier Pirate Radio Station. The license was deleted last fall. Sometime about mid August, the carrier finally went away. Maybe they "forgot" to pay the electric bill.

The last time I drove by the KOFY site, the tower was still there. Since the license is deleted, I think it would be tough to get it back on the air. As I understand it, the FCC will not approve any new daytime only applications. Even if they would, I think you'd need to wait for a filing window to apply for the frequency. Maybe a good communications attorney could work some magic to get the license renewed, but I doubt that would be cheap.

It's really tragic that a good facility like that has gone to waste. Same with KZEY, for that matter.

The only bright spot is MRS has KWRD on a LMA/Purchase agreement, and the new folks are doing reasonably well with it. I hope they don't get screwed in the deal.

Did KWRD's license ever get renewed? FCC shows it as having expired August of 2005.

That is an intersting queston. I think it was renewed and the CDBS just doesn't show it. It may be working under a STA. I'd be curious to know for sure.
