Could Nash FM be coming to Nashville?

From Radio-Info News...
Country it Is for 94.7 in New York. Cumulus Media pleases long-suffering country radio fans in the Big Apple as it turns the former WFME, Newark at 94.7 into its new “Nash FM 94.7.” The station kicked off the return to country this morning with Randy Houser’s “How Country Feels.” Cumulus appears to be developing a national country format and industry watchers are expecting to see more “Nash FM”-branded stations pop up on Cumulus-owned signals across the country. With liners such as “America’s country – Nash FM” the format appears to be programmed for national distribution.

One thing that makes Nashville unique is that you can brand a radio station in another market with the name Nash in it and everyone gets it.

L.A 92.3 or New York 101.1 would mean nothing in another market, but Nash FM 94.7 works.

They are rolling out a national format. They sure did a great job stunting and launching in NYC. The website is very hip, and slogan "Country For Life" will play very well for females and adults. Overall a really great idea was launched today in the Big Apple!

Hope it's not the future of WSM-FM or WKDF.

Let's see....why would they not use NASH FM in Nashville? I can't think of one reason not to change over to that moniker. It might put a little spark into the tough, bland three-way battle. Or maybe Crums will put all their crums in one basket and trash out one station to something new. That would be interesting....but, why expect anything stellar?

I think Nashville is an obvious choice for the Nash format. Not only the name, but the fact that they have two country stations in the market (same thing goes for Dallas. I think it's another obvious choice). If I had to guess, I would think WSM FM gets the rebrand. Simply because so far, the Nash format seems to feature a good amount of 90s gold, which works with WSM FM 's current 90s to Now lean.

Nash FM will launch in Nashville according to industry reports today, The Nash programming to all country. I believe Cumulus has two stations there. Not sure how that would work?

Country in NYC!?!?!?!?!?!?.....won't last long.

While I generally could see that point, I have to admit that the response to Nash FM in NYC has been pretty amazing. Will that last for fifteen more years? Who knows! Nashville and a properly formatted station are pretty chic these days. NYC may be just the place for a home run. Crums running it is the biggest issue to cause the demise.

So you're saying "The Wolf" gets taken out back?

They dropped the Wolf moniker a year or two ago. They've been using "95.5 FM WSM, The 90s to Now" as their branding since then. Personally, I think the current branding sounds awkward and doesn't flow. I think a change to Nash FM would be much better. But who knows, it might be sister WKDF that gets the rebranding.

What are they paying for, Jet? Geez, maybe KDF will be the new Nash. Nothing like two 4 point boring stations representing the most prolific city in America. I ain't much on country, but they need to get it right here. Like yeah....

Cumulus licenses the use of the WSM call letters from Gaylord.

If they went Nash on 95.5, they could jettison the calls and make a cost savings. With the Nash identity, why hold onto WSM-FM? KDF has far more of a personality than 95.5 does. If they blew up KDF for Nash, they'd have Nash and Boring 95.5. If they blew up 95.5, they'd have Nash and KDF. See my point?

Yeah, but the call letters are heritage. Now, to the young generation, they don't care, but for us radio geeks, I just don't see getting rid of the historic call letters. ps. I'm only 25 and someone in my generation has to teach kids today what radio used to mean, and still does to a select few (myself included).

Then here's the lesson for the day: The call letters are only heritage on the AM side of the band. On the FM side of the band, they mean far more as a unique soft rock station than as what the station is today.

When people see the Opry stage they see "WSM." Reason enough to keep the calls. <10% of people actually realize they are leased and few even realize (or care) that the AM and FM are owned by separate people. I say keep WSM calls and brand it Nash-FM. It fits - WSM is Nashville. Sure, it's the AM station, but general radio pop is too dumb to know or care about that.

On the other hand, the only call letters visitors ever see when visiting Nashville are WKDF. Either could work.

I too am only 25, but have a great appreciation for WSM and WKDF call letters. I'm sure a majority of the population thinks of 95.5 as purely country and 103.3, to the locals, as rock.

I haven't been to Nashville in a while so this is a stupid question for those of you who live there. Are the WKDF call letters still displayed atop the Stahlman (or whatever it is now) Building? When I worked there, the sign was, of course, WKDA with an alternating flash of AM-FM. You could make out the old WKDA sign on the backside of Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline album, when the skyline was far more modest than what it was today.
