Could terrestrial radio BE any worse?

I'm shaking my head today... With the news that 96rock is being blown up, it puts an exclamation point on the sad state of regular radio. Up and down the dial, it's hard to find a station that is fun to listen too. It's the same "ol" cookie cutter imaging, playlists, and jocks that can't do, or say much on-air. It's sad!

Did it start with the deregulation of radio? Companies buying up all available frequencies, and letting the suits program them with "call outs" and "auditorium tests."

And now...as of 10pm Thurs night, Clear Channel is rumored to be moving the Buzz to 96.1 and NOT keep things the way they are! Why wouldn't you keep the entire staff at the Buzz and just give them a better signal?

I have been an XM subscriber since the inception, and remember telling my PD when it came out that satellite would change radio as we know it... He laughed and said, "It'll never last!"

Well... satellite may give way to some kind of wireless broadband radio, or HD at some point, but it did send a clear message: "REGULAR RADIO BLOWS!"

Give up on it!! I live in the Bay Area, where its Spanish , Talk, or Religon, These are all deserving of their place on the dial, but for me XM is where its at!! The 60 s channel is the best! At 12.95 a month, thats 44 cents a day, commercial free, NO FORMAT changes, no affiliation with CBS/ Infinity,or Clear Channel! Life is good, and Satelite is here to stay!! When KFRC 99.7 Dumped the Oldies format, I went to Circuit City, Bought a MI / FI reciever, and feel sorry for all the "Tightwads who complain about radio" In the 60 s you had to give up on that big antenna on the roof of your house and go to Cable TV, and pay, Same for radio, enjoy it, and let these radio stations go broke XM is taking away listeners daily!! Thank you XM and the 60 s channel, Especially Phlash Phelps!!! Kenny in Concord

OK... So turning 50 is some mortal sin in the marketing world... I’m confused, but not amazed. Oldies (done right) and Classic Rock remain my rapidly-diminishing music choices on terrestrial radio--which BTW--I’m spending a rapidly-diminishing amount of time with... And WHO in that closet full of "suites" just paid nearly 19-Billion for WHAT?

In Charleston, CC’s WXLY continues to rearrange the chairs on its deck daily (it wasn't an oldies programming icon from the git-go). Oldies there have ended up on a low-power rim-shot AM that is effectively a daytimer. Even affluent Hilton Head Island NO LONGER can enjoy oldies and pop standards off the local air. Now the formerly-coveted Classic Rock format is looking less safe... One of its “Granddaddies” in Atlanta has become the latest CC "Project”. Maybe that moniker is appropriate considering the targeted low-end white boys who can’t afford to live outside such.

The “Sixties on Six” from XM is very well done, as are their other high-end formats.

Tears drop when I say this, but SAT radio appears to be the only option for us as of today. Your analogy of our migration to cable and DBS TV is appropriate. Over a period of time--we just accept the reality of having to pay for something that was once free. Need I remind you that over-the-air radio ISN’T REALLY FREE--not unless you enjoy the multiple 10-minute morning spot breaks we have to endure so the Mays boys can collect their buyout cash. That makes XM with its genuine variety and quality at a dozen bucks a month well worth it!

That head-scratching question remains (but only it seems within the halls of corporate radio): “Will they pay for XM?” Heck yes! Consider... An XM subscription equals a bottle of booze or three packs of smokes monthly... We can keep our liver and lungs around longer—and hear quality programming!
