Could the board op-ing be worse at 680

Having spent some time board op-ing myself for sports radio and various other syndicated shows I must say that it's not that hard. So why is the board op-ing so bad on 680? How many times must I hear a promo for the Jim Donnan show, et al, running over the start of the ESPN sports updates. You lose the 1st 10 seconds of it, you can hear it running underneath the promo and it's so amateurish. Is it somehow automated and that's the problem. Has anyone heard of backtiming? Is that all $7 an hour buys, a kid with no math skills. Choose a 4 seconds of dead air over blasting out 11 seconds of your feed.

If it keeps coming up during an ESPN feed, my guess is an automation problem. Yes 680 has some weak board ops, but a recurring problem like that sounds technical.

I just e-mailed the PD yesterday about this and he seemed as though he hadn't heard it.

Does he listen to 790 also??

680 uses the Scott Automated system, and if it's in autopilot, the computer screws up all the time. It shouldn't happen during am or pm drive, though.

To be fair, 790's B.O.s do the same thing. I heard about 25 seconds of dead air today and I've heard open mics in the past with out and out obsenity sneak through. ;)

I enjoyed switching o 680 for college football scores late Saturday/early Sunday and hearing 40 consecutive minutes of promos. I'd switch and come back and they were still running promos. And it's not the first time that has happened.

The biggest difference between 790 and 680 is that 790 for the most part had made an effort the past five years to try and make itself into something. It hasn't always worked and the results audience wise have been less than spectacular (except for the odd book here or there). As for 680, they stopped trying a long time ago, they put far less money into their product but come out with about the same audience.

790 crows about how much they bill, but how much more do they spend? I wonder which station actually profits more at the end of the day.

Sounds like you nailed it on the head! I have had salespeople from both stations in my office in the past few weeks.
The people from 790 spend a lot of time trying to bad mouth their competition down the dial. The 680 people seem to really try to sell signal strength and the strong personality presence. The 790 package revolves around their listeners being guys that like beer, women and sports. The 680 package shows how their demographics boast higher income, more affluent, strong north side dominance. In all honesty, the 790 salespeople are smoother, but the 680 message is more professional.
The 790 people try to sell that their guys are like in a frat house, which they think is a positive. I see them as being guys who should be long past that time of their lives. The 680 salespeople point to having a local legend for the GA folks in Buck, one of the most recognized FM names in town in Rude and the most successful local/national personality in Kincaide.
Both stations are good for what they are, but I still think one station with a mix of the talent would be better.
A thought, what if Cumulus or the Dickeys buy WGST, 96 Rock and some other Clear Channel commodities. Then the Braves could move to a 680/96 Rock combination and there would be an FM option to simulcast 680 on 105.7 or whatever that signal CC owns is.
