Could "The Harbor" Be A Stunt??

Given that the URL for the website of WHBA-101.7 (a/k/a "The Harbor" redirects to a page saying "Access Denied" (as of this writing, 3 P.M. EDT July 23rd), I wonder if the "Harbor" format is a short-term stunt and that a few days hence, the "real" format of 101.7 will debut.

Just my hunch.

I'm still not sure and I am probably wrong, but -- how can they go after 106.7 or anyone else with the inferior signal?
The first song on the new WHBA (or whatever) will be "Heavy" by Collective Soul, followed by Jay Severin saying "Welcome Best and Brightest"...

I still think there's a 2% chance the WHBA calls were picked at random, that 101.7 will simulcast WJMN 94.5 for the balance of the summer, then MOVE the JMN format (with a harder Unrban tweak) to 101.7 permanently and put the Talk on 94.5 after Labor Day...

Granite Guy,

That sounds plausible. I have this feeling they will use something they already have and make it better instead of developing and promoting a new format. At the end of the day, this is still NOT a competitive signal they can use to pick a fight with someone else.

Why would CC risk blowing up a very successful station that gets the majority of its ratings from the white people in the suburbs outside of Boston so that they gain a couple of rating points by switching it to talk?

A lot of people on this board may not like the format and the music selection, but WJMN has posted solid ratings book after book. It can be argued that it is a successful #3 in the area. It's always in the top 5 (usually the top 3). A good chunk of their audience are not 12 either.

my guess is the long-awaited Urban format is almost here. with a bilingual edge sticking with the LYN roots

My guess is that, as anticipated, they are going to the same "Jack Lite" format that they've alreadly flipped a few stations to. With that signal, it's not going to be a major threat to 'BMX, 'ROR or Magic, but the format will do well enough in an advertiser-friendly demo to survive.

But at some point, CC will have to mount an advertising campaign, as many listeners in the market were scarcely aware that WFNX existed, and the ones who liked WFNX are highly unlikely to stay tuned for 30 seconds after "Bennie and the Jets" or "Come On Eileen" or "California Gurls" starts playing. In a publicity vacuum, it will be lucky to show up in the next Arbs.

There is no "Harbor". I just punched up 101.7 and heard rock with a "WFNX" drop-in.

Why are we all speculating about something that isn't there?

Especially given the source, I must say that the above speculation sounds completely logical to me. At some point, the "the ($14 million) check got lost in the mail" stories will wear thin and the listenership will subside to more normal levels, but in the meantime, can anyone think of a more productive (and less costly) form of stunting? I think this intentional "fiasco" is a brilliant publicity stunt.

Hispanic Broadcast A...?

That's been brought up but in many cases I don't think the word Hispanic is used (other than maybe a college's Hispanic society).

CC's choices include:
--doing a Mike like format and making a lot of money
--putting conservative talk on FM and doing OK though an older demo
--putting Spanish on FM and doing Ok but who knows.

I'm guessing the first option but as Dennis Miller says "that's just my opinion...hey, I could be wrong"

Numbers inserted by me -
What is also interesting here is none of these require new studio space in Medford. Numbers 2 and 3 they already have, and number 1 is a Dell computer sitting in a closet -- emphasis on "making a lot of money".
