Could This Come To New England?

WXIN-TV channel 45 in Indianapolis will introduce a morning newscast starting at 4:00 am beginning in January. And some were saying that a 4:30 am start was a crazy idea (some = Alex Beam of the Boston Globe).

PIX 11 in NYC has been doing a 4AM newscast since September.

But New York is the City that never sleeps. And 'PIX is also the station that runs a video of a burning fireplace on December 25th every year. Nowadays, it could REALLY stand in for the real thing for people with large-screen HD TVs in surround sound stereo. I believe on that day, it gets higher ratings than many regular TV shows, perhaps more than its 4:00 am newscast.

I think 4 AM start times will become common within a few years. I also think that is where stations will draw the line. I don't think there will be any 3:30 start times for a long long time.

Correction to the original poster: WXIN-TV (FOX) of Indianapolis is channel 59, and is also owned by Tribune, much like WTIC-TV is, same graphics package and all.

I myself already think 4:30 AM is overkill. The only time it makes sense is when a big blizzard or other weather catastrophe is occurring or is imminent. ::)

Laurence apparently doesn't believe in virtual channels, never mind that there's not a soul in Indianapolis who'd recognize WXIN by its RF channel number. I'm surprised he doesn't simply say "WXIN (656-662 MHz)" :)

If any markets in New England were candidates for a 4 AM newscast, most likely, you'd have to consider Boston, being a major market, and possibly Providence (and in Providence, I wouldn't be surprised if it was WLNE).

Who's actually up at 4 in the morning anyway? Most 4:30 shows are already pulling small numbers and miniscule share points. Why do it? Because it's there. Not profitable in any way, but it's there.

At times, I'll browse user-posted television listings from the 1970's and 1980's and look at some of the offerings from network-affiliated stations, like "Summer Semester". Heck, stations sometimes didn't sign on until 6 AM. How times have changed... ::)
