In recent days, it has been announced that two local TV news operations at Tribune-owned stations (KSWB San Diego and WPHL-17 Philadelphia) will soon be closing down, with NBC-owned stations in each market producing a 10 P.M. newscast to replace the current in-house 10 P.M. news programs.
Washington is another city where both Tribune (WBDC-50) and NBC (WRC-4) own local TV stations. WBDC does not have any local newscasts, and to my knowledge, has never had local news.
Might WRC start producing a 10 P.M. newscast for WBDC??
It might be an uphill battle: Fox-owned WTTG-5's local 10 P.M. newscast is long entrenched in the Washington market. I have heard that not only does WTTG's 10 P.M. news often attract more area viewers than any local 11 P.M. newscast, I have also heard that WTTG's 10 P.M. news often is the top-rated program in it's time period, news or entertainment. If that's the case, no wonder Tribune never launched a local news operation at WBDC. There might not be enough available viewers for it to succeed.
On the other hand, having WRC produce a newscast for WBDC is cost-effective, and a small rating could make such a newscast profitable.
I wonder if sometime in the next few months (maybe in early 2006), WRC might start producing "NBC 4 News At 10 On WB-50"??
