I've thought for quite a while that CC seems like a much better company than Cumulus. At least they fill their non-live times with something instead of automation and seem to put in a little more effort.

It could be changed but that would take some orginal effort from the big companies as well as some of the independent stations working to improve the quality of what goes out over the air. That means having some on the air talent that is live and local doing something that you can't get or hear anywhere else except on that station and something that people really want to listen to other than just music and card board carbon copy programing produced from some where else and piped in to fill a void, granted alot of the general public doesn't know that what their listening to isn't live and local, they just know that it doesn't sound that good to them anymore so they leave radio and go looking for something else some find it some come back. It's not just can afford to do this but also are they willing to do so or just look the other way or should I say listen the other way and pretend everything is ok and let the pay check keep coming while it's there. This is one reason why some of these threads seem so depressing, I am not saying there isn't a basic lack of money in some cases to run on but all in all some times I think it's how much money can I squeeze out and make a bigger profit not just the lack of that's killing the radio industry little by little.

I agree. Its not always lack of money. Its the risk of spending money. (to impress stockholders)
Instead of spending 1 million to make 5 million - lets cut, reduce & minimize - and spend a quarter million to make 1 million.
Then, over time, we do THAT five times over
Nevermind that 4 GMs are out of work, 4 Sales Managers, 4 traffic depts, 3 PDs, 3 production depts, 3 morning shows, 4 night shifts, promotions, HR, etc etc etc

Worse yet - that mentality is not just in radio.

i agree gordon. that mentality is not just in radio. working for the post office used to be a sought after job where the waiting list was long and families transfered positions to other family members. who would want to work for the post office now? technology has almost made that great job obsolete. same in radio. since voice trackers have access to the same liners and station information the local announcers do i would prefer to hear a well prepped tracker than a live and local jock with less ability. it is an entertainment business after all.
