COUNTDOWN TO CITADEL

Tonight (Monday night) at midnight, the big change...any bets or guesses? Like how many seconds after midnight that The Twister flips to oldies?

That can happen, KTYS needs to leave The Wolf alone and let them compete with KSCS since KSCS is doing great in the ratings, why need the Twister to help?

any thoughts as to what will happen to the network and the 24 hour formats, if anything?

My guess, Bob, is that they'll continue the streamlining that has been going on (and that victimized you) for years and keep the ball rolling. Sorta. It would afford them the opportunity to feed some of their underperforming stations the bird and kill off more air talent nationwide. I'm in contact with the few remaining friends there and there are some decidedly clinched butts!

Citadel has a ten-year lease on all things named "ABC Radio." I don't anticipate any immediate changes in the network. The RADAR report is showing so much of ABC at the top, it's too early to change much.

One thing, however, more important, imho, is the fact that Paul Harvey's ten-year contract is up in December and Paul wants it to continue, it appears ... with comments made that he was "kicking like a mule" to turn over anything to Fred Thompson, et al.

Paul's "swan song" near in the hands of Citadel? He's a huge money maker ... but at 89...

Good day!

Yeah but Fred wont be there now that he is gonna run for Pres......Gil Gross (who fills in from time to time and who does ABC News from WLS Chicago where Paul records his shows) would be ok..some people think he is a bit too goofy..I like it myself....Hell Gil was hilarious on the Big89 Rewind of WLS over Memorial Day...and when he does fill in for Paul, he makes some funny comments on the stories that Paul doesnt...also I think Gil CHECKS the stories....Paul H has been caught several times repeating urban legends, etc....

Yep, Gil would be a good call, CW. And soon, I'd hope. My grandfather bragged that he listened to Paul Harvey every day, "starting in the '50's." I looked it up; ABC started carrying Paul Harvey "News and Comment" in 1951.

I'm betting that it won't be Gill Gross ... good as he is. The network relies on him to do PM drive anchoring - mid day on the left coast. He also fills in a lot on KGO and other ABC talkers. I don't think that Doug Limmerick who fills in from Washington will get it, either, though I like him ... he's strong in the mornings for ABC as an anchor and was heir apparent to that slot when Joe Templeton, then, Jon Belmont left. He's good ... but not quite Paul.

Sam Donaldson did a decent job for him filling in last year, but the "Sam factor" of bias would be way to apparent to replace the "Paul factor" of bias. And somehow...I can't hear Donaldson doing "Tru-Value" or eye-drop ads...

No, I think it will be an outsider. Again. Folksy like Thompson, but someone who can "run the division" since Paul Harvey News is an entity to ABC with it's own office space and facilities in Chicago. Paul doesn't have to stand in the hall at WLS. Hell, the street next to his office is named for him...

I'd say that it would be young-son Paul, Jr. to take over the gig, ala John Gambling at WOR.

Who in the heck replaces Paul Harvey? Maybe one of his own...in fact the only one of his own. And he does, after all, write The Rest of the Story stories for pop.

He can still do the piano concert dates and either fly home on dad's Gulfstream or phone it in from a nearby affiliate. He's got another good 20 or 30 years in him, to boot.

Then again, I hear that Don Imus wants to make a comeback in a big way and with Citadel's money, could you imagine...? "Go screw yourselves, you nappy headed pinko-pansy commie bed-wetters.... I'm Imus in the Morning ... Good effin' Day!"

Well, that's it. I'm calling it a night. While you guys slept, here on the left coast, I stayed awake past midnight, wondering if the earth would shake, whether the ionosphere would open, whether Sean Hannity would announce that he quit, whether KGO and KABC would remain on the air and whether ABC News would come on the hour.

I expected the second coming with Citadel's awakening at the midnight hour.

And you know what?

The world's still spinning and all is the same as it was.

Till tomorrow ... a good day, but for tonight ... a good night.

The only change I see is Citadel's name at the bottom of 96.7 and 96.3's websites.

To these old ears, the late Joe Holstead was the absolute best at filling in for Paul in the several times that he drew the chore.

Hey Mike

When is the Twister gonna change to oldies? They're still country.

Ya got me. I wasn't speaking as an "insider," just a hopeful listener.

As soon as phrases are said at staff meetings like, "We're not changing anything," "Nobody's fired," "We're going to step back and see how things run," THAT'S when you can expect a imminent, mass change. And that's the time to start collecting empty boxes from the dumpster...avoid the rush.
