Countdown to end of radio

This will be more distracting since drivers will be playing with the dash computer screen to find something they want to hear. If you read auto magazines you'll see some of the complaints these magazines say about these new car gadgets.

Is there anyone besides the morons who run radio that didn't see this coming? If you continually put out an inferior product, this is what happens.

Didn't Arbitron branch out and conduct a political poll last year that all of the Fox pundits relied on? ;)
Thanks for this, Wilson! It confirms what the youngsters in the Beach Boys video told me, that the only time they listen to the radio is as actors, when they're paid to do that. I started my own personal "Countdown To The End Of Radio" when the last commercial radio executive I saw told me to ... well, I can't tell you EXACTLY what he told me ... but it happened in 2008. I knew then that the end was coming for them all.

NO ONE is pointing out the REAL reason auto makers want to remove AM/FM radios. I'll tell you it has nothing to do with lack of demand OR Content...

The #1 reason is!!!!! They are NOT being paid to include them..

The reason you see Sirius/XM in cars ..iHeart in Ford Sync etc is because these companies are PAYING to have their product included in autos.. The Auto makers are looking at further ways to make more money off that auto purchase and right now they are NOT making money off the AM/FM Tuner as it is. There is a reason they are also looking at removing CD Players.. It's not because consumers are saying the do so .. there is no money in it for the auto maker.

Little early for an April Fool's, isn't it? Last I heard the car companies were in the business of selling cars, which I think they know they'll do best not by collecting as many bribes as possible to install crap that consumers don't want, but by giving them what research shows they DO want. Er, doesn't that sound like common sense? By your logic, Ford and GM might as well remove air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, and airbags from their vehicles, too, because none of that stuff makes them any money.

Guess what, Jake...you're going down the tubes with us....

For an entertainment "center" in a car to provide FM and AM radio alongside all the other choices they are talking about takes just a few more dollars. I think xmusicmatt is right. Get ready for a stick-up radio industry.

I can't be sure about 102.1, but the 98.3 FM frequency that I can receive where I live has sounded so bad most of the time this year that I now think of WCRS as essentially an internet-only station. At least that's what I tell myself it is, so that I don't get too depressed when I turn on 98.3 at 7:00 on a Thursday or Friday night. I strongly recommend while talking with others that they stream the show through our website, so no, I don't feel that I'll be going down with anyone. Bring it on, Detroit!

Today, the magaine that printed the story in the original post of this thread, RadioInk, said it received a letter from GM saying:

GM has no near term plans to eliminate AM and FM from GM vehicles. We are committed to providing consumers innovative services that dramatically enhance the driving and riding experience. We expect AM/FM radio to be one of the choices consumers have in our vehicles.

So there you go.

Jake,

I only like to listen over the air myself. Sure wish the WCRS-LP CE will fix the audio problems.
The audio quality over WCRS-LP and its 98.3 translator has sounded very good over the last few years. Now the audio "Bugs" as you called them last week are also bugging me!

Also, noticed WCRS-LP has been making scheduled changes over the past few months or so.
Doe to listener response?

Hi, Artie! Wasn't "Bug Day" fun?! I hope you were able to hear it well enough to appreciate The Fall's sense of humor. Any schedule changes I assume have resulted from new locally-produced shows being introduced into the lineup, replacing syndicated programs. Allstar2003 is our director of programming and would maybe care to comment here?

We all KNOW that if the Government can require seat belts, air bags, black-box recording devices,
catalytic converters and ever-higher CAFE standards on automobiles, they can require a radio too.

And I suspect they will, just as soon as the NAB has distributed enough Walkin' Around Money
on Capitol Hill.

The cost of votes has gone up. Radio money doesn't come close to electronics money. And telecom money is more than both. The electronics and telecom industries don't like radio, and they're behind the push for new devices in the dashboard.

All those radio talk shows promote fewer government regulations. So the industry is basically shooting itself in the foot with it's own programming.

They really need to fix the audio quality issues.. I was listening to 98.3 FM in Upper Arlington today around 6pm-7:30pm on the drive to work and the audio was in mono and distorted in parts.. It sounded bad and as much as I tried to listen to it for the value of the "unique" content it was hard.

I did an A/B test between 102.1 and 98.3 while 102.1 wasn't distorted like 98.3 but the quality was not what I would have considered broadcast quality (but was tolerable) -- the signal at least on 102.1 didn't distort in parts.. [The broadcast on 98.3 sounded like they are picking up a low bit rate internet stream and it was over modulated -- I really hope that's not the case as it would be in FCC violation as 98.3 must be fed via "off air FM" signal]

They really need to get their act together if they want to be taken seriously... or just turn in the license.

Radio will never die because it is free to any person of any means. Having to pay for this new gadgetry is what keeps radio alive. The day any of these other formats are free we then really have something to fear.

Jake,

Maybe you can get your show on WCBE?

If I ever decide to write a book about all of the people at all of the stations who in one way or another treated me and the music like ... well, you can rest assured that Dan Mushalko and WCBE will feature quite prominently in one of its chapters. Oh yeah, and that Randolph clown who was there, too; can't forget about him. This was all before WCRS came into existence of course, but yes Artie, I did make the attempt to hook up with them.
