Counterprogramming against Jack

How do you think some of the other stations should react to Jack? Here are some ideas.

KMXB: Drop most or all 80s including lunch feature. I'm sure they won't be as foolish as Mix in Baltimore, soon after a sister station went Jack, Mix/Baltimore had an "80s weekend".

KXPT: Drop what little 80s they play. No need to play songs like Livin' on a Prayer". Concentrate on 70s. Go with a deeper library with a little more "Oh Wow". I think they have the right idea with their "Thousand song weekend"

KSTJ: Maybe as a last resort try classic alternative, lot's of the stuff Dusty used to play, just a little more familiar. If Jack ends up being a high cume/low TSL format, classic alternative could be smaller cume/high TSL with a loyal audience that has passion for the format. They could even play some 90s alt. Go all the way with it, if they keep playing mainstream 80s they are toast.

KJUL: No, of course a station like that doesn't react to Jack. But, they could take advantage of the fact that Lite left the format. They could evolve from adult standards to a gold based Soft AC. This is their golden opportunity to become a 25-54 player. Will they do it? I doubt it.
 
i agree with you on everything, except KSTJ...they tried a classic alt. station in Seattle and it lasted for 6 mos...then it became Jack....i am so happy las vegas has jack fm.......still behind the times when it comes to new formats.

Everytime they play an 80s song, it's like running a commercial for KSTJ. A good programmer would know that.

That's true, classic alternative has a poor track record, it's probably too niche.

Maybe Star could shift to straight ahead AC? Mike and Beth would fit on AC.

Star needs to do something. If they stay 80s, I could easily see them tanking into the one share range.

Believe it or not, classic alternative, the stuff KROQ in Los Angeles used to play, might have a chance with younger listeners. A new group I hear a lot of young people mention is the Postal Service. The Postal Service sounds a lot like the Cure and other New Wave bands. I think a growing number of younger listeners are seeing the limitations of hip-hop and growling, tattooed anger bands. There's simply no energy left in a lot of contemporary music.

80s music isn't dying, but the "80s and more" radio format died a long time ago. I give KSTJ credit for finding a way to get extra years of success compared to their 80s counterparts nationwide. But, even Star's numbers finally started declining over the past year.

Jack would have been the perfect format for Star to evolve into. They would have kept their existing audience and added a lot more. When you think about it Jack is the ultimate 80s and MORE format.

Of those 3 stations, I think that KKLZ will be least impacted by Jack. KKLZ just needs to specialize in hard classic rock,which is what they mostly play anyway. Drop the few Jack type songs they play such as "Rock the Casbah".

As for KSTJ and KXPT, I already gave some opinions. What does everyone else think? It will be interesting to see how they react. Even if they do nothing, they still have made a choice as Rush says in their song "Free Will".
