I noticed around 6pm tonight that country 105.5 started calling themselves "The Wolf". When and why did the change happen? I was listening at 7am this morning and they were still the old name.
It was, about 10 years ago. WKSJ was Clear Channel's country station and The Dawg, WDWG 104.1 was their Classic Country station.
Clear Channel bought up too many stations with city grade signals over Pensacola and had to sell off one. They had TK-101, New Rock 107, 98.1 The Ticket, 96.1 The Rocket, Lite Mix 99.9, 95 KSJ, and 104.1 The Dawg.
While it would seem that unloading 98.1 would be the smartest move, they wound up trading 104.1 to Cumulus for 104.9 out of Moss Point, Mississippi which covered Mobile (at the time) but not Pensacola. This worked out for them because 98.1 The Ticket covered Pensacola but not Mobile.
Later Clear Channel traded 98.1 for 92.5 in Biloxi and moved 104.9 from Mobile to Biloxi, so I would assume that they could now acquire another 100kw Mobile/Pensacola station.
