Country 92-5 Morning Show

Speaking of Country 92.5, they are tied for #1 with WRCH on the overall ratings charts. Country has been doing really well in a number of markets throughout the region.

Including Boston, a notoriously weak country market. Some of this may be that WWYZ and WKLB are showing up in more and more retail establishments and offices as background music and thus triggering the PPMs, but you can't overlook all the crossover successes in country these days, not to mention the "American Idol" final coming down to two country singers. That's a lot of positive buzz for country radio to capitalize on.

Although I posted that WWYZ was tied for #1 in the Hartford market, that was based on incorrect information published in the ratings charts on this website.
Actually WWYZ was #1 in the overall ratings, with a 10.4. The second most popular station, WRCH was .3 behind them. This is apparently the first time WWYZ has reached this level. Good times for country radio in the northeast.

I don't know if I completely agree with that characterization. Consider that Taylor Swift and Kenny Chesney have each sold out Gillette Stadium for two nights. Taylor in June, Kenny in August. Not too many other artists can do that. Of course, 100,000 fans at a venue is only a fraction of the total listening audience. But country radio is capitalizing on the success of these superstars, attracting new fans who are finding a focused and entertaining presentation on country radio that fits their lifestyle. Neither WWYZ nor WKLB are very heavy in the personality department. They get to the point quickly, and your chance to win is always a few minutes away. The station itself is the personality, not a few specific people. It worked 45 years ago, and it's working now.

When you consider that the average big-name country artist can sell out a popular venue in New York City - where there is a grand total of zero country stations on the radio - it may be a moot point in that regard.

My point is that if you have a radio station in that area, you can capitalize on those kinds of things. And obviously WWYZ does. Just last week, I was watching Blake Shelton on The Today Show, and lots of people were holding signs with WWYZ on them.

Taylor Swift doesn't need a country station to sell out NYC; she's on all the ACs and hot ACs too. Kenny Chesney can sell out NYC by packing the place with Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut people who DO have country stations. Let Manhattan keep listening to Lite and classic rock, and the Bronx keep listening to the urbans and tropicals.

Taylor Swift has also crossed over nicely into CHR territory (Z-100), as well... Meanwhile, unless I'm forgetting someone, I can't think of a major male country artist that has had as much crossover success in the last 10-15 years or so as the females like Taylor, Faith, Shania and Carrie et al.

The bands -- Lonestar, Rascal Flatts, Lady Antebellum (for whom the female member doesn't always sing lead) -- have done OK, but you're right about the solo men. As big stars as Kenny Chesney and Brad Paisley are, CHR and AC don't seem to buy what they're selling. Guess there's still too much twang in their voices and/or production. I always thought Brooks and Dunn had a big crossover hit in them, but it never happened. Maybe if Kix had sung lead rather than Ronnie...

How about Keith Urban? Rascal Flatts did a duet this year with Justin Bieber.

The big no no is wearing a cowboy hat. You do that, and pop stations won't play you.

That explains Chesney, especially. He's balding, and with the hat off he looks like a buff George Costanza.

and a couple years later they hired another crew. they were good to. I enjoyed both morning crews.I cant remember the names.Somebody can help me on that.
