Country anyone?

Let's get serious. One country station in a town that obviously loves their country. Even when country was just hangin' in there, this one station maintained top 3 position. Now they are growing just like the genre.

So who is it gonna be?

Anybody? Somebody?<P ID="signature">______________

Country is and always has been a winning format in any western city except San Francisco. To work properly, the format requires a long term commitment and a substantial operating budget as well. Clear Channel tried to compete with KIIM but they did it on a shoestring budget. That doesn't work. 97.5 tried country and failed for the same reason. Classic Country is a format that deserves attention. KCUB was Classic Country until Citadel took over and switched it to sports talk with no ratings gain resulting. A station in Benson has been programming Classic Country for many years. It's live, locally produced and quite unique. It's on 97.7 and if you can get far enough away from BOB-FM on 97.5 you can hear it.

A shame that Clear Channel chose to lose Coyote Country. Silly as the name was, it was still nice to have an alternative to KiiM. The talent was far superior, that is for sure.

But I believe part of the deal in bringing the ops mgr (Tim Richards?) back, was allowing him to play with his new pet project, AAA. While not a horrible idea, it did not have to be done at the expense of the country station. I obviously don't know what the ad revenue difference is, but it can't be much different that what Coyote was bringing in. Even though Coyote never beat KiiM, it did bring in respectable numbers. Mountain has not done much better, yet they are allowing it more time if not more money. I'm very sure that Coyote would be doing great if Debbie Wagner had given it the same opportunity as they have given The Molehill, oops, I mean The Mountain.

And, as I have mentioned before, the country station allowed for more promotional opportunities that is some cases helps the entire CC cluster. Country fans are VERY loyal and that is a good thing to sell to advertisers.

Well, just an armchair GM I guess. For what it's worth.

If they were able to make money with the Coyote, they would have kept it. The Mountain is probably making more money than Coyote did. They also have better ratings, from what I understand.

I'd like to know for sure
I believe "The Mountain" continues to exist because if it changed format management would be looking at admitting to making mistakes
The music causes me to change channels more often than not
I wonder if some songs were ever listened to before being played on-air

EXACTLY. As I mentioned before, this has been a pet project for management and they are giving it more time. I seriously doubt it could be making significantly more money that a country format could bring it.

I feel the only way CC-Tucson will go back to country is when new management comes in.

This thread seems to have switched from Country music programming to the Clear Channel mentality. Clear Channel seems to have a policy of doing everything in the cheapest possible way, except in markets of 2 million or more. Most Clear Channel FMs are little more than jukeboxes connected to transmitters. It was this approach to programming that ensured that Coyote would fail. You can't beat something with little or nothing. Mountain also is a low budget operation but nobody is trying to compete with it and nobody is likely to. Mountain probably is operating at a profit because their costs are so low.

Some very good points are being made here. But since this thread is going off of the Country subject--please see new subject "Meanwhile, back to Country".

Sorry to say, the Mountain actually SHOULD stay. Why have a second country station, when the first one dominates? I happen to like a lot of the music the Mountain plays. There is not another station in town like the Mountain, so why take it off the air to play what you can already hear on KIIM?

I submit that we have answered your question. Money and ratings are the reasons we have one country station. You seem to be in favor of putting on a country station simply for the sake of having a competitor to KIIM. No sane operator would do that.

And LA

And LA.

Re: Mountain

Nothing to be sorry about. Mountain has found a niche. Nobody else going after that crowd. Even though they sound somewhat less professional than KAMP.

There you go again.

Emmis loves KZLA, as it billed over $30 million last year, has no direct competitor and very reasonable operating costs.

It's also the most listened to country station in the USA.
