Country...how about rock???

The dance/hip-hop/talk/hits format is out fo control. New York City, supposedly home to hot new young bands, has no modern rock station.

Everyone whines about how there is now country station. How about an alternative rock station?

Technically, Free-FM dedicates more of it's clock to a rock music format than it does to music. From 7p-4am, plus weekends, it's all rock music.

K-Rock proved before hand that the alt-rock format, if programmed by CBS, doesn't work in NYC. Clear Channel's properties are pretty strong in the city. So then what?

when I get out of the ny area,
rock music sounds really good but here it just doesn't sound like rock
examples of this are Why can't free fm sound like these ones in other markets?
wmmr 93.3
WCCC 106.9
Lazer 99.3
WAAF 107.3
WBCN 104.1

I would say that there isn't even real dance music in the NYC area. Hearing the Beegees 10x a day doesn't qualify as dance to me, even if they throw in a new dance track or two per hour inbetween the old disco and 80's ballads.

The argument that is used over and over and over again about rock is that this isn't a rock market. However, I can't see a rock station doing any worse than Jack FM, Free FM or perhaps even Mix. But old mentalities die hard.

it simply boggles my mindthat a metro area of 14 million is unable to support 1 modern rock station. Free FM, when it does play music, plays 10-15 year old Sublime and Pearl Jam. All free FM plays is an updated format of classic rock.

If any network is daring enough to gear a station towards rock again in New York City, it would behoove them to follow the lead of hot 97 in that: they play primarily music no older than one season, When they do play gold from established artists they play an album cut instead of the single, and they allow the dj's to have hour long mix shows where they program the music.

Maybe for a morning show, they can stream the daily show or the colbert report with music mixed in while for drivers.

Anyone who uses myspace knows that rock is alive and well, and as embarrasiing as the lack of a country station in new York is, the lack of a modern rock is even more shameful.

I agree. Keep O & A and do an alternative station correctly after that and it has to do better than the current FreeFM.

I totally agree as well. Unfortunately though it's the suits that see things otherwise. Of course, I think it's well established that many in the biz are absolutely clueless, and that's evident by looking at the ratings and hearing what's on the air.

How is that any different than when Howard was at K-Rock? It's not.

almost right. and thats a good thing. Originally the statement was that the whole station had to be revamped because they didnt have someone to replace Howard, now they do, OandA. The difference is that the rock format cannot be what it was. It needs to be much closer to something like MMR than Q104 as it was before it flipped. FreeFM doesnt work. It speaks for itself. The old Krock and what I suggested would do better than where Free is right now, but as someone already said, the suits are set and it wont happen.

I think there was a "suits" meeting that went something like this...

SUIT #1: Sweet, we just signed Opie & Anthony to replace David Lee Roth! This will get ratings up and establish Free FM!
SUIT #2: Uh, yeah that's great and all, but maybe this hot talk format wasn't the best idea. I mean, it is New York City and there are people that listen to rock and alternative. Maybe we should try and keep O & A and bring back some form of rock?
SUIT #1: No! We need to keep the station alive with yammering idiots talking about macho and cool things while making fun of the people at the same time all while keeping the "too cool for school" attitude that makes the shock jocks exciting.
SUIT #2: Of course! What was I thinking? And advertisers definetly want to reach the mindless sheep that listen to this crap.
SUIT #1: I know! Now, when our audiences are driving in their trucks and drinking beers at the same time, they can have talk show hosts that speak their language. Who needs anything like substance or intelligence when he have this type of programming.
SUIT #2: You're a genius!

now it all suddenly makes so much sense

Glad I could help. You know, I know some of us were wondering is things like substance and entertaining personalities might come back to radio but since I eavesdropped on that conversation, it's all clear now.

Please stick to the regular topics on this board, i.e. select from only the following:

1. Why don't we have any country stations in NYC?
2. Someone has to bring the oldies format back to NYC! Quick!!!
3. KTU sucks. They should just give it up.

Thank you for your cooperation.
