Country in Dallas

Can Country Radio get any worse?

Where's the great programmers?

They've all been forced out by idiotic, short-sighted corporate dweebs

I saw John Sebastion bragging about how the WOLF beat KSCS in every major demo on allaboutcountry.com. It kind of brings me comfort to see him brag because I can remember him doing it 25 years ago. It's one of the few things that hasn't changed in radio.

As he broke down the numbers I wasn't so impressed at the shares the WOLF had (although to win in all those demos is something to be proud of), what really stood out to me was how low the combined KPLX/KSCS share is. Even if you add the fringe signals the country share in DFW is shockingly low compared to what it used to be.

On the other hand, have you tuned to 95.3 (Dallas) or 95.9 (Fort Worth)? KHYI and KFWR may be rimshots, but they represent the future of the Country format.

The problem is that they don't cover the market, so they don't really provide alternatives to most listeners. In terms of city grade signals, KFWR only covers the western third of Tarrant County. KHYI doesn't have a city grade signal to either Dallas or Tarrant County. So, they are had to pick up in office buildings, etc. in much of the market. I work just down the freeway from KHYI's studios and can't easily pick it up on my radio in my office.

Even if you are OK with a weak signal driving around, at some point, when KFWR's new sister KSCG 95.3 Meridian signs on, KHYI will likely face co-channel interference in the western part of the market. So, KHYI's footprint will only get smaller...

KSCS, KTYS, and KPLX have playlists that aren't much different than other big market country stations like WKLB Boston, KKGO LA, WUSN Chicago, KMPS Seattle, etc. Therein lies the problem...this is Texas. It's kind of amazing Austin's AAA KGSR plays more Texas country/Americana songs than "96-7 the *Texas* Twister" and "*Texas Country* 99-5 the Wolf" and it's not a country station.

Particularly when KPLX dropped much of the Texas content two years ago, it seems like KTYS really missed an opportunity to do what KFWR does, but on a signal that better covers the market. Why it keeps getting programmed as a country version of Radio Disney escapes me...

I totally disagree,,with Dallas/ Ft worth being one of the most competative "Country" markets in the US, I think there is something here for everyone,,The Wolf & KSCS cover Nashville pretty well,,,The Twister is slanted toward a younger demo ,,The Range covers Americana & The Ranch is Texas,,,,less we not forget KNON and their afternoon shows,,,

and probably some others I've overlooked,,,,,,Tune In!,,,,Not Turn Off!

Just My Thoughts!

I'll be glad when "today's country" has run it's course. At least when you heard the beginning of a Merle Haggard song you knew who it was.

Can't say the same for the new clowns, I mean artists. Can you say "cookie cutter?"

You can say pretty much the same thing about all music these days. I stopped buying new music CD's after about 1994 or so.
