As far as differences between LA and SF, the differences I notice surround spoken word formats. In SF, news stations like KCBS and KQED are very successful. Sports talk is also a winner, unless your a station other than heritage KNBR. Talk stations like KKSF and KSFO are a little lower down the ratings chain.
In LA, talk is very successful. Well...KFI is successful anyway. News station KNX is a little further down, and non comm KPCC struggles compared to KQED. Sports Talk also has a tough time. However, LA still has both a Spanish Talker and a Progressive Talker.
News, especially in depth coverage, dominates San Francisco
Talk, of the more interesting, local, and entertaining variety dominates Los Angeles
