COUNTRY IS COOL AGAIN? COULD BE?

Now what do you call this campaign and interest from Mayor Bloomberg bringing
besides the millions the CMA CA will bring to the city,($30 million ) just an
endorsement to help with the effort to draw attention to Raise
Country Music's Profile?

Just that? To tell people, hey country music is alive and doing well in billboard?

Umm...something is coming soon? Make your predictions, which station?
And don't come that this or that is not viable. Recall what happened with CBS FM, none of you apparently thought that was a viable station to change its format. Umm?

Who, which radio station you think will give one more opportunity to country music?

WPLJ, WXRK 9.3? The Peak? I go with WPLJ! But CBS is broadcasting the show on tv! What an irony CBS-TV, (WCBS-FM 101.1 now 1011jackfm) the CMA will attempt
to create a larger presence in New York City through a series of events
leading up to the main event at Madison Square Garden.

Oh man, I forgot, Bloomberg has a station and with this Digital Radio with the capability of streaming, maybe he could add a "country" stream channel to his radio station?

Come on all of you, correct me from the top to the bottom that I am so wrong in my assessment?

No, won't think of that...from Jack "bad boy "attitude" to Country by Christmas"?

Actually nothing surprises me anymore! Oh, could be streaming *country* through
the new streamings features built-in for these High Definition Radios *buzz* by next year or before? Hey you never know!

Now some observations, ok, just mine. Yep, WPLJ, and curiously I remembered someone on this board who said have your heard what WPLJ is saying? "more variety".

There was this listener "me" driving my car, yes I was listening to 95.9 WPLJ
and a female voice said:

"The New PLJ Music Mix, now with more variety"

But don't let radio industry make a fool of us "me" again? think...

THE SLOGAN IN THE WPLJ WEBSITE STILL READS:

The BEST Mix of the 80s, 90s, and Today.

Why is WPLJ in their morning show choosing country music to do one or two
music parody? Ok, granted they have done that before, but still, umm!

Why is WPLJ announcing and encouraging listeners since last week to be present
this Monday to the see the Broadway shows on the streets.

Also Billy Currington will perform two songs from Broadway musicals in
New York City on Monday night (June 13). (Today) He will be joined by 12 leading men in current productions for the Broadway Under the Stars event in Bryant Park, backed by a 30-piece orchestra.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::

So what's up? After years of stagnating album sales and declining ratings,
country music is surging in popularity once again.

Other indications are all around us. Mercury artist Julie Roberts is the voice
of the new "Good Morning America" promo. Not to be out "countrified," the
"Today" show enlisted Phil Vassar to co-write a theme song for an upcoming
segment.

With New Crop Of Hot Acts, Country Is Cool Again
May 04, 2005
By Jeff Pollack

While no one was looking, country music snuck up and caught us by surprise. Sure,we all noticed the ratings and attention that CMT was receiving, and every once in a while we'd see that a country album hit No. 1 on The Billboard 200, but few people put all the pieces together to detect what has become a clear trend: Country music is back.

You need to look no further than the NBA All-Star Game for confirmation. When
that bastion of hip-hop culture features a halftime show with Big & Rich singing "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy," you know something is up.

CMA Awards Head to New York City in 2005
One-Time Move Is Effort to Draw Attention to Raise Country Music's Profile

By: Calvin Gilbert

Next year's CMA Awards show will take place at Madison Square Garden in
New York City, officials announced Tuesday (Oct. 5). CMA executives and
New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg confirmed the one-time move from
Nashville during a press conference in New York City. The show will
take place Nov. 15, 2005.

"The Country Music Association is a true pioneer in the music industry,
having successfully established country music as a leading genre, and
we're going to take this event to a whole new level," the mayor said.
"New York City has a proven track record of hosting the biggest and
most-watched events around the globe."

Billed as "Country Takes New York City," the initiative will give
New Yorkers a taste of country music through promotional activities
involving a wide range of local institutions, including Broadway and
the fashion industry.

CMA board president Kix Brooks noted, "We are taking country music to
the street. Goal to be present in every corner, every club, everywhere
you turn. New York City moves on the muscle and heart of its people and
the themes and issues that dominate this format -- the struggles people
face and overcome everyday -- are the backbone of what we are and what
we do. New York City is not lacking country spirit."

"This is a tremendous amount of trouble we’re going through to do this,"
Brooks said. He added, "We feel the pluses far outweigh the minuses."

The Brooklyn Country Music Festival is a free music festival featuring New York
City's finest local country, blugrass, old-timey, and honky tonk talents.
The 2nd Annual Brooklyn Country Music Festival will take place over the last
two weekends in July, 2005. 40 different acts will perform their own brand of
country music over 8 days at two venues, Freddy's Backroom (7 days)
and Buttermilk Bar (1 day).

Completely agree.... There is a very strong surgence of new talent in the country format that appeals to the younger segment. Apparently, advertisers feel that the "younger" generations have more buying power...so, the advertiser "bias" that so many speak about may be coming to an end. Country IS cool once again and the NY airwaves are ripe for the format. True, that nothing is surprising in radio anymore..."Jack FM" refreshed that thought! Who knows what will happen with the CMA influence coming soon to NYC...one never knows! But looking from the "outside", I feel that WPLJ is one of the better prospects for a "hot country" format. ABC radio has thier paws in quite a few country outlets as well as the "Best Country" sindicated programming. So, yes...I do believe that something country is in the works for our NYC airwaves.

Thats all great, but aren't ountry numbers down around the country? the hayday is over... country's biggest acts all do crossover hits for pop stations and do collaborations with pop and hip hop artists to get recognized. I'm not going to say I wasn't shocked that CBS-FM switched, I was especially when infinity has two other stations that have seen far better days! However it flipped to a format that tends to garner great demos. The New York Market however lacks the types of people, lifestyles that propell various Country stations across the country. Its been done with failing results a couple of times and while companies are trying to cut costs, a country station would be big budget promotion and no guarentee of an audience.

For country and oldies NYC is going to have to rely on satellite radio for the forseable future. They can not draw the billing that the big NYC sticks require.

From what I've been hearing JACK-FM might not be able to either!
