the guys who were just deposed from 96.9 have a website up looking for a gig...
I don't know how not so Great as of late er Media would react if the distant cousin of Mongtomery Burns
ended up on another signal while still doing overnights, but they have no problems using part timers who work at other
stations, some that are even rim shots into Boston.
As for Stu, it isn't an issue.
But Bob if you want to do it on your own, I am all in favor of it.

Sounds great, but alas, sans streaming, I won't be able to enjoy it except on monthly trips back to the North Shore. I did manage to pick up WWBZ Athol in a New Britain, CT, parking lot the other day, but unsurprisingly, not a whisper of WJIB.

Bob has talked about the expense for licenses, etc.
However, I believe there ARE cheaper alternatives.
If I am correct, you can get a slot on Live365 and they take care of all the licensing, etc. (At least I think that is the case.)
My point is there are some cheaper alternatives and ways around the prohibitive licensing costs.
Live 365 has a "Professional" package that on-air stations can take advantage of. The rates are higher than that of the independent broadcasters, but it certainly would be a viable option for WJIB and WJTO as well.
Well worth checking into, since ratings aren't an issue, but nighttime reception is!

Been aware of Live365 for a long time. They have different packages... but last I heard, mot packages that are affordable are for no more than 365 listeners at any given time. Other packages for less, other for more. But if WJIB has a weekly analog AM audience of let's say 150,000 people and an average qtr hour of 7,000, what good is another 365 ? Not really all that much; and certainly not worth the vastly additional reporting (to licensing agengies) requirements. WJIB's computers are so old, one cannot find a working printer that's compatible! And my pulling records and playing them occasionally on air.... for streaming, I'd have to enter all info into somewhere. Just a pain in the butt. So it's not just the cost.
1.) Well, it's a start, you could try it and see how many people actually use the stream...and see how it goes.
2.) 365 extra people listening...and therefore becoming part of the contribution base? Might be worth it.
3.) Where do you get that figure?
4.) Good radio is always a pain in the butt.
Servicing your audience and adding new audience who might become contributors might be worth the pain.
A 7000 AQH would be the equivalent of a 2.4 share, or good for 15th in the market.
In truth, the station does not show in the subscriber listings and increments of 365 if controlled only to the local level (geofencing) might result in donations.
WMWM does some kind of streaming--live 365 also on TuneIn. We prob have fewer than 365 listeners at a given time but who knows? Ads run on the page etc.

I don't know what streaming system they use but I listen to a show, Stu's Show, where celebs from the babyboomer generation, etc. appear; last night it was two TV experts, and next week, Leonard Maltin. The host was saying in his
case he does it at 64kb so even those with weak Net/phone connections can tune in. He was saying there were between
800-1,000 unique streams tuned in last night

Well I don't know if 7,000 AQH would = a 2.4 share, but back in 2007, when The Boston Herald did an article about WJIB's music royalties increase, they said it was because WJIB had exceeded 5,000, which was the threshold for a huge jump in royalties; from $6,000. a year to $34,000. a year. That was confirmed when I talked to BMI and ASCAP. PeopleMeters started in Boston around 2009 and WJIB has never emitted any PeopleMeter signal in WJIB's signal, so any PeopleMeters hearing WJIB, come up blank. WJIB does not air the PPM signal because WJIB is commericial-free and I really don't give a rat's you-know-what about the ratings.
Well they can be trusted, just like The Other Paper In Town (Don't Worry, Eye'll Think of The Name, as Norma Nathan used to say)...well...
That lure of $$$ may work in most places/stations, but WJIB just stops it's fundraising announcements when the goal is reached. No more needed. WJIB does not need to bring in "as much as possible" but rather just meet the goal every year. Perhaps this lack of ambition is why I don't own a Class C FM!
That's a disservice to the radio industry. By not encoding, your listening, whatever it is, does not contribute to the total radio listening levels, making Boston radio overall look like it is less effective.
The more listening you have, the more you make radio look bad.
Encoders are free to all stations that are home to a market, they require minimum effort to install and have no downside.
