Country Music Comes to 94.7 FM NYC ?

Country Music Comes to 94.7 FM NYC ?

If WFME is sold, could WFME go Country ? I believe 94.7 FM was a country station before they were sold to Family Radio in 1962 I believe.

Re: Country Music Comes to 94.7 FM NYC ?

Here's a wacky thought: Disney/ABC makes a move to get 94.7 as WEPN's new FM home.

Worth the consideration, at least... :)

Easy Listening...sold to FR in '66.

I posted the same thought on another thread. ESPN goes to 94.7 FM, Family to 1050 AM. The issue is that 94.7's stick is in NJ, not on the ESB. Whoever buys 94.7 has to build a directional stick on the ESB. It wouldn't be the first NJ stick to move to the ESB. When Malrite bought 100.3, it was a small signal out of Newark. It was moved to the ESB when it became Z-100.

I concur, it's worth the consideration but I don't think it will happen. Not as long as Harold Camping is still with us. :)

Re: Country Music Comes to 94.7 FM NYC ?

I don't think they have space to build a directional stick on the ESB. It's pretty crammed in up there.

You are correct. The rent for a standalone FM antenna on Empire, or even on 4 Times Square, would be prohibitively expensive as well. If you can't go into the (nondirectional) master, it's pretty much impossible to make a go of it at either site. 94.7 is where it is, and it's not bad at all from there, really.

Re: Country Music Comes to 94.7 FM NYC ?

In that case, then, WKMK should have that stick. Then, their on-air marketing slogan "From Atlantic City to New York City" would really become true. ;)

Seriously, I would think that there's still some value in having the stick where it is now, as 94.7 could then cover areas not reached by the 1050 signal.

A question though: could radio work from the new 1 WTC? I've only read about the TV angle and how it's too expensive for a move-in, currently.

Just what I thought, Scott. WEPN wouldn't be solving it's problem on 94.7 and no one's going to move the stick to NYC. ESPN isn't going to get on FM in New York anytime in the near future. Emmis isn't letting go of 101.9 any time soon. Sorry Jets, Knicks and Rangers fans, you're stuck on a directional AM! ;)

Look Guys Doomsday is really a code word for pledge drives and bailouts in the Camping type religious media.

Re: Country Music Comes to 94.7 FM NYC ? Signal on 94.7 not really an issue

Actually WFME does transmit out of West Orange like 100.3 did before September of 1983. The old WVNJ FM though only broadcast at 5,000 watts while WFME transmits at 20,000 watts giving WFME a very good signal in Manhattan. Also WFME reaches to the north east of the city with a signal comparable to other EMpire State Building signals. Their signal to the west is slightly better than other NYC FM stations. So WFME's signal is not an issue. The main reason though a transmitter up on the Empire State Building is a better idea is at that height the station would only need to transmit at 5,000 watts. In fact all the NYC FMs there transmit at 5,000 watts with a 50,000 watt effective power due to height. So a move there would save the station a ton of money in electric bills. Other than that, say Lite FM even moved to 94.7 and country went to 106.7, 94.7 would do fine (PURELY HYPOTHETICAL)

Now Country on 94.7 would be an excellent fit and they could remain right where they are being most of the audience is suburban anyway. Still West Orange brings a very good signal to Manhattan anyway. I had them on a few times while driving in Manhattan and had no signal loss whatsoever.

Personally, though I would love to see Oldies from 1955 to 1989 on WFME and called 94-7 Gold with any CBS FM alumni that is not airing on CBS FM 2:The Sequel. Also have Cousin Brucie and Don K Reed on there...Just my preference. Frankly I hate country and actually like church music on WFME more than Country (do not exactly care for church music either) Still WFME's problem is integrity. Camping has ruined this ministry.

Re: Country Music Comes to 94.7 FM NYC ?

WFME could be a great station. What I'd do with the station, if Family sells it (unlikely), would be to move country or ESPN there. Not only could you simulcast 1050, you could air different sporting events from 1050. The problem was that 1050 got the Knicks and Rangers rights even though their transmitter is literally right next to the Meadowlands.

Even with the Knicks rights, they could simulcast. Country would also be good, serving the NJ households that need it.

The issue seems to be the expense of constructing a directional antenna on the ESB. 94.7 is short-spaced to Springfield, MA. You've also got 94.5 in PA just west of Trenton. :)
