What's the better name? Cat Country or Froggy?
Having worked in the same building as one of the earlier "Froggy"'s (Winchester, VA 1993) and having worked for a Cat Country as well, I have to say two things: Froggy sucks as a moniker, has no relatability whatsoever unless you live in a frog-infested swamp, and I always felt embarrassed for the jocks who had to take on the cookie-cutter names (Al E. Gator, Jimmy Hoppa, et al.) To me that concept is the very epitome of laziness when it comes to creative thinking in our industry. As for Cat Country, I could never understand the willingness to go get some Garfield-looking character as your station mascot or logo.
Be a cat, if you're a cat! Slashing claw marks, sleek, powerful jungle cats - be a CAT, not a pussycat. You don't see the Detroit Tabbies or the Carolina Calicos in the NFL, do you? Be bold! Be up front, and brand your station both verbally and visually with a logo people will WANT on their cars.
It's time for aggressive thinking in radio to stop being "how can WE copy what they are doing in (insert Top 25 market name here) BEFORE the guys across town do?" Jesus, we got into this business because, ostensibly, we are creative-minded people. So lets BE creative, and not just in how we pad our resumes. Make your station stand out.
Gee, I wonder if I can still jump on that "Jack" bandwagon....
