Country on 91.5

The CMA has leased air time on 91.5 FM WNYE. They are playing country radio shows with hosts from around the country. It is good to hear country back on the NYC airwaves even if it's only 7a-7p for a week. Maybe the CMA will continue to lease air time with the city of New York even after the CMA awards. A good effort to start getting their product out there to the fans again. They have to start somewhere....

Just out of curiousity, are they running the music in Stereo on WNYE-FM/91.5. How's it sounding?

It doesn't sound bad. They are broadcasting in stereo. Problem is....alot of the programming is being cut short by WNYE's community programs. Yes..it's better than what we've had, however NYC needs a full-time, full power outlet.

It isn't full time country from 7am to 7pm. Some of WNYE's regular programming is still being aired.

It is doubtful that WNYE will lease time in NYC. to the CMA other than for this upcoming award show. There is NOT enough interest in country other than in the suburbs for it to generate enough of an audience nor is it lucrative.
WNYE is operated by the City of New York. If country music were to be tried again it would be much better fitted on a suburban New Jersey station.
______________

...or a Westchester signal. As I had said before in a previous post, I think WRWD (107.3) out of Poughkeepsie would benefit by simulcasting off a Westchester stick into the northern suburbs. I do however disagree with the "lack of interest" for the format in the area. (and NYC) My friend is a former PD of a country formatted station in this area, and you actually would be surprised how popular country really is in the city proper. What it's going to take is someone with the guts, experience (and $$$) to program a hot "new" country format for the area. This is the ONLY way to truly gauge today's "interest".

Has anyone seen or heard a schedule? I know we can expect to hear folks from KNIX, WXTU and others. Just trying to get an idea of who's on when.

I tuned in for a few minutes on Tuesday afternoon and heard two people from WXTU. The reception in my office is terrible since I face northwest towards the ESB. I assume WNYE is still broadcasting from Brooklyn?

While I'm sure there would be a huge interest in a full time country station in NYC, I sincerely hope that WNYE doesn't consider taking on the format full time. 91.5 serves a very important role as a community public radio station. Adopting a commercial music format on the frequency would displace much, if not all, of the station's ethnic programming. Plus, they are the only station in the area to carry certain NPR shows. How fair would it be for all of this programming to be displaced?

There is no huge interest in country radio in New York. The interest is minimal at best.

91.5 fm is a non commercial frequency so not to fear, WNYE could not adopt a commercial country music format.

In addition, WNYE is run by the City of New York. It will continue to serve the ethnic population of this extremely diverse city.
______________
