Country Radio In Columbia

I've noticed Country Legends 94.3 in Columbia opening up their playlist a little bit and playing more 90's tunes. They were originally a 60's-80's country station. I've heard mid 90's tunes from Garth Brooks, Tracy Byrd, and others. Their liners haven't changed for the most part yet because the 90's tunes are sprinkled in here and there to make too much of a big difference. Columbia may have 3 country stations, but they all differ. WWNU is 90's and new, WWNQ is 60-90's and WCOS is playing a traditional country format with classic rock sprinkled in. Which station do you guys prefer the most? As a former country listener (late 80's-early 90's), I would say WWNQ is the best in my opinion, with WCOS not far behind. Overall, do you think 3 country stations will continue to thrive in Columbia?

Neil

I like WWNQ best with WCOS close behind also. WWNQ doesn't reach my area which is a good thing for me since I have WLRE but when I go to Columbia Country Legends 94.3 is whats on my radio most of the time with WCOS sometimes. I don't know how long three country stations will stay on Columbia's dail but so long as they do I will be listening.

I don't agree too much with you on WWNQ...the numbers have been falling on that station. (then should put Glenn Garrett on there in the morning!!). As for WWNU what does everyone think about the new morning show?? Tyler & Tanner is it beter then Roper??? As far as WCOS.. If they would sound like their having fun then it would be good. Try to sound more LOCAL guys! Mornings need a STONG female or male (thank god Pam is gone...she was so bad and could not pronounce anything to save her life!!) I think a live jock at night would put a whoppin on Mike at night!! Any one get any input on any of the Jocks (here in cola) on the Country stations????

I have to agree with you about WWNQ. It sounds stale and Glenn Garrett could do wonders for it and I am sick of the liners that they are using and could use live announcers. I am sick and tired of everything sounding so canned in radio and it is obvious where they are headed by the numbers if they do not do something there soon. I really love Tyler and Turner in the morning and it is a fun show and WCOS just needs to do something and I am afraid that Clear Channel is their worst enemy and they sound old and tired and I wish that they would get rid of Charlie James and his boring big mouth and give something in the mid-days other than Kix Leighton from WSSL in Greenville tracking it and I agree that something live at night would help them too, but do not look for it anytime soon comeing out of that CC cluster.

Well if Country Legends WWNQ doesn't work out in the long run, why not put a CHR or Rhythmic CHR on 94.3? I think it would turn a lot of heads.

Neil

I dont know about you guys however when WWNQ goes down they should flip to Radio Disney...I think that would work very well in cola! As far as WCOS I dont think getting rid of Charlie is the answer..Just get someone in there wanting to have FUN on the radio with him would be good!!! I like it when Ronnie Lane fills in for someone..kind of sounds young and fun again!!! Any thoughts

The big problem with WCOS is that they sound old and Charlie really does not help them at all. I would not mind seeing Tumbleweed and Ronnie Lane together because that would sound younger and fresher. I remember when 96.7 was country and it was the Weed and West morning show. It was funny and young sounding and I listened every morning over Jeff Roper. I think that the Radio Disney or even a Classic Hits format would work very well with WWNQ and frankly we have to much CHR or Hot AC sounding stuff already in this market to satisfy me.

Agreed. Glen Garrett could do wonders. People in our business (Managers) don't want to make any extra effort.....especially if it might cost $$. Personal effort is rewarded with a plaque or 10 dollars in trade at a place you wouldn't go. Out of market voice tracking is what CC is going to do. It's cheap and simple and if the talent sounds good.......it's one less thing on their plate.

I challenge any Owner/Operator to hire a talent in this day and time (pay them better than 8 bucks/hr) and train and market them to be the best in Columbia.

OM's/PD's/APD's....are out of sources for new talent. Sweepers sound better. So much for live and local.

Tyler and Turner are a breath of fresh air and will become a Midland's favorite this Spring.
