Country Star Comments on Nash FM

Kix Brooks (formerly half of the highly successful country duo Brooks & Dunn) asserts that sales of his records have doubled since Nash FM 94.7 took to the airwaves. He also said that sales of other country artists are way up, as New Yorkers buy huge amounts of country music recordings.
As Kix does an overnight show heard on many Cumulus country stations, including Nash FM, it certainly seems possible that he is stretching things a bit. But he also mentions that radio is still so important to country artists, and continues to have far more influence than anything on the Internet.
That is probably the reason country artists still frequently thank country radio when accepting awards.
With all the competing programming on the Internet and satellite radio, apparently local radio can still give a huge boost to an entire musical genre.
Perhaps a station playing some sort of contemporary rock would have a similar sort of positive influence on that genre. Radio can still be important.

As someone who's a number cruncher by nature, this made my head hurt with numerous red flags. Unless there's more he's not sharing there could be any number of reasons that may be, but over all it's a huge generalization wrapped in typical marketing hyperbole. Toss in the fact his latest album doesn't even rank on Top 200 iTunes country, and Brooks and Dunn greatest hits are 67 and 165 it looks even less impressive. If you sell 6 of something that sold 3 last week, your sales doubled, doesn't make it great or significant.

In no way am I suggesting Nash is underperforming or won't influence (important) NY metro country purchases, just his summation leaves much to be desired.

Seems to me that Lew Dickey said before NASH signed on the air that New York was already the top market for country music sales. If not, I know the CMA said it was back in 2005 when they brought their awards show to NYC. The number of people concentrated in one area makes it inevitable that NYC is the top country sales market even before there was a full time radio station.

However, he's right that OTA radio moves a lot of product. Just compare sales of artists with traditional airplay to those without. Sure there are a handful of exceptions, but for the most part, if you're getting airplay, you're selling a lot of product.

The TV program CBS This Morning had a segment today about radio still being very important to country music artists. It featured interviews with some of the stars interspersed with video of Nash FM's personality Kelly Ford doing a show (using rhinestone encrusted headphones).

Don't see that video.

The video was evidently moved to: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50144201n. If it is moved again, just do a search on that page for Stars sing radio's praises in Nashville.

Keep in mind that Kix Brooks is in the tank with Cumulus, as they are the syndicators of the countdown show he hosts (American Country Countdown), as well as the new "Kickin' It with Kix" overnight show. You don't really think he's going to pop up and say, "Oh, yes, country SUCKS, and the NASH brand is going to fail miserably", do you?
