Couric #1 in SW Florida

CBS - WINK is on Channel 11 while all other stations are on UHF. I realize SW Florida is a heavily cabled market so most of the UHFs have lower channel positions on cable.

But then maybe it's a case of viewers which only had one VHF sticking with it long after they had to?

WINK appears to be the market's 800 pound gorilla (a la WSB-TV, WTOC, WPVI). Also, CBS demographics tend to lean older (and the demographics of SW Florida tend to lean older). Everything looks like it comes together to make a Couric victory possible there.

Could it be that the nursing homes don't allow their residents to change the channel?

No.................................................... nursing homes don't get diaries. anyone care to answer why????????

buzzzzzzzz ("what is because theyre not permanent housing????) dddddiiiiinnnnnnggggg you are correct and win your very own teevee station!!!

I Win!

It is ridiculous that Nielsen, as part of its standard sample, measures only in-home viewing. Besides the usual argument about viewing in bars not being credited to sports networks, what about in-office viewing to networks like CNBC?

And it’s even more ridiculous that, in this day and age, the majority of Nielsen markets STILL have ONLY diary measurement 4 months of the year. (The entire concept of "sweeps" is such a joke...people do watch TV the other 8 months of the year!) The Local People Meter technology that’s just now being rolled out to the larger markets is 1980’s technology that should have been made available so very long ago. (If you have ever seen what a Local People Meter looks like, you know what I'm talking about.)

Don't know why so much disrepect towards Couric. I know a lot of people love to bash "the perky bitchy cheerleader" but after Katie called out the gross sexism towards the Hillary campaign she won my respect. It's a breath of fresh air not to have a reporter on the Obama band wagon.

Couple of items here...while I haven't been down in the Fort Myers area for awhile, I spent considerable time there while my grandparents lived out the end of their lives there. WINK-TV has been the 800 pound gorilla down there for a very long time. At one point they were a 3 service giant, WINK-AM-FM & TV. It is not surprising that CBS & Couric are strong there, WINK-TV is very strong there. Secondly, while there are certainly nursing homes there, the greater Fort Myers area is pretty well loaded with expensive retirement communities such as Shell Point Village, and a large number of gated communities designed for people 55+. And many of these folks aren't poor.

I agree but you have to remember Nielsen isn't interested in measuring total audience. Nielsen is paid by the stations and/or networks. Networks don't care about how many people watch, they care about how many potential customers watch. TV spots have grown so costly it's not cost effective for most companies to use TV (perhaps with subchannels this will be an option)

So to waste time an engery and money on counting people who probably want buy is not a priority.

A true poll is random and changes. People think Nielsen is a poll, but it's not it's a measure of data. That data is determained by those who pay Nielsen for its service

These same people (55+) are the same ones who won't buy products advertised on these stations. That's why there are early-bird specials; it's the only way to get them to go out and spend any of their money.

Well since I'm 55+ you're showing a ridiculous ignorance about the age group. I have money to spend, and I spend it. While I can honestly say that I've been set in my ways since I was 20, most people my age who grew up driving a Chrysler or a Buick, now drive a Toyota. They can be influenced and are by advertising. They go on trips, they buy homes, they buy financial products. We are NOT home drooling our oatmeal. Get a little education about what you are talking about before you speak or write.

Simple, it's hot in Florida and so all the audience's brains are fried and think when they watch Katie Couric they are getting Angelina Jolie.
