Cousin Brucie comes to Sirius

Radio legend, Cousin Brucie (recently of WCBS-fm in NYC) will join Sirius as of July 4th. WCBS-fm recently dumped oldies as its format, and let their jocks go, including legendary Cousin Brucie. NYC is now without a major oldies outlet, and Sirius is looking to fill that void with a well known dj to lure listeners to its ranks.

Watch for others to follow if they don't have non-competes to sit out.

This is blowing up in Infinity's face.
______________

I'm glad that Sirius has picked up Cousin Brucie and it's a great plus for Sirius. But as far as "blowing up in Infinity's face". I don't know about that. They knew there was a very loyal oldies audience and they knew it would go elsewhere. The thing is; that audience is growing older and that demographic is not what Infinity really wants as far as advertising dollars go. That's why they flipped to the "Jack" format. I don't think they are shocked that the former listeners are complaining or leaving. If that had been the case, they would have flipped much lower ranked sister station, WNEW Mix 102.7" instead of WCBS. This is happening all over the country and the radio owners are looking for a younger demographic as the oldies demo grows older and less attractive to advertisers. It really has nothing to do with how "passionate" the oldies audience may be.

Anyone know what channel he will be on? I checked the article on sirius.com, but it didn't say. I thought maybe '60's Vibrations, but it says he'll be playing hits from the '50's, '60's, and '70's. Does this mean he'll do shows on channels 5, 6, and 7?

I checked the '60's Vibrations page thinking maybe they'd have some additional info, but no luck. This leads me to another question. What happened to Big Jay Sorenson? He's not listed on the dj's page. I didn't know he was leaving, but then I usually listen to Sirius Gold rather than '60's Vibrations .

>> Big Jay and Gene Michaels were removed from 60s Vibrations (6) on Sirius. Pat St. John has taken over Gene Michael's morning shift and Big Jay's evening shift remains empty...Sirius running it on autopilot for the time being. Both guys were excellant jocks IMHO, radio can be cruel.
Edited by AZJoe on 06/11/05 04:54 PM.

Ummm, demo is growing older? Evolve the format into the 70's then! Please, oldies are oldies, have to move along. "Jack" is the solve all creation. (Meet you back here in a year and a half to discuss this) Also Jack is a cheap format to run, while WCBS costed dollars to have personalities on there. (Hate to tell you, you have to spend to get back, this will become painfully obvious for a lot of people soon.)

Bad business and decisions. Not the 1st time bad choices have been made.

REPEAT: Evolve the format into the 70's then!

I will give you, in NYC, the 45 year old female has a few places to go to relive her childhood. But, in Chicago if you are in the same demo you are SOL. In Chicago they have basically turned off gold based music for people over 35 years old.

@ 45, most people are already stuck in their habits and their childhood oldies are "safe", and they balk at new music.

It really has
> nothing to do with how "passionate" the oldies audience may

You are right, but it is also bad business. Infinity is putting a lot on the line with Jack. They killed 2 outlets in the top 2 markets where there were 2 other outlets underperforming compared to the Oldies outlets.

In simpleton terms, you have 2 investments. One gets you 1.00 but is failing to bring a higher return, and is actually predicted to drop off. The 2nd one is getting 50 cents and is stagnant. Do you replace the 50 cent investment or the 1.00 1st? DUH!!!!!!!! Why slaughter the cow that is still producing milk????
______________

Sounds sort of like a "One step forward, three step back" move on Sirius's part. You bring in Cousin Brucie, then let Big Jay and Michaels go. Makes no sense. I hope they start to pull in some talent to fill in those airparts. Heck, even a younger person (25+) who has the knowledge, drive and heart is better than just rotating.
