Coverage of School Massacre in Newtown

Right now the following stations are providing non-stop coverage of the Massacre in Newtown:

Country 92.5
95.7 KISS-FM
99-1 PLR
KC 101.3
FOX Sports 1410
The River 105.9
WICC 600
WLAD 800
WATR 1320
WQUN 1220
The Talk of Connecticut
News-Talk 960 WELI

Obviously Clear Channel is simulcasting NBC 30. Earlier WLAD was carrying NBC 30, but they have since switched to taking calls from listeners.

I suspect WTIC-1080 also has had extensive live coverage, as of course, the major Hartford/New Haven TV stations.

As I write this (4:50 P.m. EST December 14th), I am watching WTNH-8's coverage via their website.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone there in Connecticut. I've tuned in to many of the stations that are on iHeart Radio and they're pretty much wall-to-wall with coverage, mainly letting people call in and talk about what happened.

God bless these children, and may they find peace with the Lord.

Twenty killed are children. The principal also was killed, as well as five others and the shooter. I heard about a brave kindergartener whose teacher was shot dead by the shooter, and took several kids with him to an evacuation area. God bless him. He should get an award.

When I made my initial posting WTIC was still carrying Limbaugh. WELI in New Haven and WLAD in Danbury both pre-empted him.

Later 95.7 KISS-FM, 99.1 PLR, KC 101.3, and 102.9 DRC-FM all had local call-in shows.

The Kiss in the Morning Crew - Courtney, Brady, and Walmart Jeff along with Munchie were on 95.7

Vinnie Penn from NewsTalk 960 WELI was hosting with John Meyer on 101.3

Mary Jones from The Talk of CT (WDRC AM) was hosting with Jerry Kristafer and Floyd Wright on 102.9

I don't know who was hosting on WPLR.

WTIC-FM and WRCH both simulcasted press conferences from WTIC 1080.

There was some coverage also on WEBE 108 (my mom said she heard morning man Storm N. Norman on) and Springfield's WMAS-FM.

More Connecticut music stations broke format and covered the shooting all day than New Jersey music stations that broke format during the hurricane.

Mark I listed to 'LAD online being the station closest to the scene and being as they carry NBC News Radio, they carried NBC 30/CT. But I am glad they did go live local with phone calls. Good move on their part.

Even 95.9 The Fox, with help from WPLR broke format.

Over here in Seattle, all the channels were in regular programming. Shame on them.

When Columbine hit, WPVI and KYW in Philadelphia were wall to wall on it, even though they are 1600 miles East. KYW simulcasted KCNC-4.

I was VERY disapointed in WTIC's coverage on Friday.

What happened did they fire their news department? Instead of having live coverage from WTIC News staff they instead kept going to national CBS coverage, and it was sloppy, a lot of time they would cut way into the "special report" and then other times they would cut away to play commercials.

This is not the WTIC I grew up with.

I think you're off base on your TIC assessment. For the record, there's a fully staffed newsroom loaded with some of the hardest working people in the business. The newsroom is staffed 24/7, year round. Where else does that happen these days?

There were local reporters on the ground and live personalities in the studio. They cut to the network feed because a national network clearly has more resources than any single station. The more information, the better. WTIC AM and the FM did an outstanding job, without a doubt.

To be fair, CBS network had the most even-keeled reporting on Friday. They were consistently breaking information that was correct , so it's not tough for me to see why WTIC would want to tap into that reporting as often as possible.

I tuned in for the John Rolland show and did not hear one local reporter from the scene, it was all national and then coming back to John Rolland who was overwhelmed.

It just was not the WTIC coverage I was use to.

WTIC really blew it. Someone's head should roll. They did not have anyone on the ground and stuck with Rush way too long. Their "news" department should be embarrassed!

You're so wrong. There were reporters on the scene. There were reporters in the newsroom doing research and checking facts. TIC had some of the best network resources at their disposal. There were live hosts in the studio. Was was taken off the air until today for wall to wall live coverage. All vigils and press conferences have been covered live. What, EXACTLY, was missing from the coverage? What Information was missed? What was wrong?

You can't say local, because there was plenty of local coverage.

Tell me, what did you miss for information?

Oh, you mean the co-owned station that carried the SAME EXACT programming as sister station WTIC?

If you really listened to WCBS the whole day, how do you know that coverage was lacking on WTIC? Or are you just bitching for bitching's sake?
