Coverage of Wildfire Tragedy

Right now, at 8:45pm, 3, 5, and 12 are continuously covering the death of 19 firefighters. On 3, Fields, Marie, and Tyler are covering the situation. On 12, Kim Covington is covering the story live.

As of 9:30pm, it appears that all the stations are covering this terrible tragedy. While all the stations are doing a good job of covering this story, 12 News meteorologist John Carroll is doing an excellent job explaining what may have happened from a weather perspective. He is very passionate about weather phenomena.

All stations have called in some of their weeknight personalities. 3 had Royal Norman, 5 has Sean and Catherine, Troy and Kari showed up on 10, and Mark Curtis is on 12. 15 had broken in as well by 9:45, and they had Steve Irvin in (but I think that's normal at 15).

3 is additionally going to bed a little late, pre-empting their 9:30pm sports show and their 10pm non-news program.

I was going to say the same thing that they all brought some or all of their "A" teams in. Marie started out with the newsbreaks on 3 and was joined first by Fields and then also Carey. (I missed Royal during the channel surfing). Same thing on 5 as their normal Sunday guy started and was later replaced first by Sean and then Catherine Heard Troy and Dave Muncie on 10 but missed Kari and also saw Mark and later LynnSue. Stephanie Hockridge began the evening on 15, was later joined by Christopher Sign who was kicked out of the anchor chair when the big guy Steve made his appearance.

Somebody mentioned John Carroll on 12. He did do a fine job of showing the storms over the Prescott area earlier today and how they came down over the Yarnell area. I thought his description of the start of the fire was unclear as he made it sound like it started today when it actually began with a lightning strike on Friday afternoon around 5:30.

I agree with the general lack of certainty "When the Yarnell Hill Fire actually started...Friday"- - -
The ability to see the bigger anchors on this sad tragedy, was interesting. We bounced around the various channels time to time...

Yes, I agree there seemed to be a bit of confusion around when the fire actually started. But, at least, everyone was trying to get pertinent information. On 12, Jim Paxon -- their fire expert -- helped put the situation into context. LinSue got a bit teary-eyed, as she always does with tragedies.

I was disappointed with 3TV's coverage of the Prescott Fire Chief's press conference. It looked like their reporter, Crystal Cruz, was using her iPhone to show the coverage and file her live report.

All in all, the Phoenix stations did a decent job of covering the tragedy. One thing I'm always worried about in Phoenix is these dry lines of thunderstorms/monsoon storms dropping out of Northern Arizona. Often, we never know that they are coming, which apparently played a big factor in the firefighters' deaths.

KSAZ on their morning show interviewed the owner of a trailer park and construction business in Peeples Valley this morning and he confirmed that the fire started Friday evening by a lightening strike. No specific time was given that I remember.

Places like Yarnell, Congress, Kirkland and Wilhoit may not have very large
populations. It's reassuring to know that the Phoenix stations are ready,
willing and able to cover events whenever and wherever they occur. Here
in Prescott, we are just devastated.

Skype on a 4G phone is really a minor miracle for reporters who are 'first responders' to fast breaking news stories. Satellite (or terrestrial remote) trucks take longer to deploy.

Joe's right, this Hotshot crew saved lives and property numerous times over the years. A terrible loss.

It's worse than that. They all came from the same town - average age, 22 years. Biggest loss of firefighters since 9/11 and they all came from the same small town.

Not when the other stations had regular cameras! If all the stations were Skypeing, then I would be much more forgiving.

God Bless the families and friends affected. Tucson has done great coverage btw, and have done very well to be sensitive about this.

Yes, our prayers are definitely with the families. I would like to point out that the average was much higher than 22 (that was an incorrect statistic that the media published).
