Tom, I would like to see where you are getting the numbers that say the Saints are in the bottom half of the NFL as far as team radio network numbers are concerned. The Saints have always done well in that category, whether they are having a good or bad season. Also, to say that half the Superdome would be made up of Cowboys fans during Saints-Cowboys game in New Orleans is ridiculous! The Cowboys had a good turnout in 2009 as well as 2003 (last year they played there), but it wasn't half the stadium.

JD, most fans live within the coverage area of their flagship station, including the Saints. But the Saints have a unique flagship station, WWL, which has daytime coverage from Houston to Pensacola. And at night? WWL covers 38 states.

This survey comes out every year in October from the Harris group. They call a random 2500 people or so and ask about your favorite NFL team and a few other questions.

Typically it looks like the Superbowl winner gets a big spike the following year but then drops off if they are not one of the historically more popular teams.

Cowboys finished 1 or 2 every year but once (4) since 1998 (They skipped 2000 and 2001 for some reason).
Here's New Orleans' data
New Orleans Saints 24 19 25 29 30 29 31 21 17 24..or about a 24.9 average

Anyway, the point here is that there's a reason why the Pittsburgh Steelers are seemingly on 12 times a year even in Dallas. And I'm sure teams like Green Bay and Chicago probably get on TV or radio's Game of the week more often then others because of their larger followings.

That said, I agree with any Texas' radio stations picking up the Saints broadcast for the next year or two if they feel they can make some additional money. However, if their market is somewhat competitive, I just wouldn't surrender Westwood One rights to carry what is more likely a flash in the pan level of interest.
I think Saints radio and marketing should make their push in Alabama and Mississippi and not worry about Texas.

Who the hell cares about the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints? Is that what you actually asked? Well, everyone, of course. Several of the calls made to WWL 870AM during Super Bowl week were out of the Metroplex. Dallas Cowboys are America's team no more. The New Orleans Saints now have that distinction due to winning Super Bowl XLIV despite the destruction of Hurricane Katrina just four years prior.

That's funny. ONE measly Super Bowl does not make you "America's Team". Check back when you win a few more. Also, The answer to the question "Who cares?" is not "Well, everyone, of course". The answer is 93-3TheSurge cares, and that's about all. First, the last time I checked this is a thread regarding the COWBOYS in the Dallas/Ft. Worth market. Shouldn't you be on the New Orleans board? Also, NOBODY mentioned the Saints prior to you on this thread, therefore answering my rhetorical question. And, for the record I LOVE the "America's Team" arguement. The fact remains that the Dallas Cowboys are America's Team and there's nothing anyone can do about it, because the name was given to the Cowboys first!
 
Thank you ButtnPushr , I am sick and tired of this America's Team argument. The cowboys are America's team, always have been and always will be. The Saints win one Super Bowl and they think they are the best franchise there ever was. Go back to New Orleans and root for your crappy Saints.
 
ButtnPushr, read the previous posts on this thread. It seems that a lot of people in the DFW area listened to the Saints' historic Super Bowl run this past season. If you don't like to hear talk about the Saints in an NFL themed thread, then move on to another thread or message board that better suits your needs.

And to you DFWRadioman, since when do "crappy" teams win the Super Bowl? You can hate the Saints (I mean, I would if I were you), but you have to respect them.

To keep this post somewhat radio related, in regards to TomFicker's post, I don't doubt the Saints were #24 among a survey of fave teams before the 2009 season started, but I thought you were speaking in terms of team broadcast ratings, where the Saints typically finish in the Top 10. The Saints Radio Network is one of the most listened to team networks in the NFL.

Surge, you seem to be misled by your undying love for your team. While I admire your unwavering support for your beloved Saints, you seem to be skewing the facts. One guy listened to the 1st Quarter of the Super Bowl, and 2 others listened to the post-game celebration on an out-of town AM station. Not exactly listening to their historic run, like you suggest. Also, "If you don't like to hear talk about the Saints in an NFL themed thread, then move on to another thread or message board that better suits your needs." Last time I looked at this thread name it didn't say NFL or Saints. It says COWBOYS/KRLD-FM. NOBODY here mentions the Saints until you do MULTIPLE times. And my favorite, "The Saints Radio Network is one of the most listened to team networks in the NFL." I'd like to see the data supporting THAT statement. That Sir, is your opinion because you are a homer. It is not based on any fact... unless a poll was taken in your apartment.

Oops, I almost forgot: December 19, 2009.. COWBOYS 24, Saints 17. Unlike you, the scoreboard doesn't lie.
 
ButtNPushr, the Cowboys are an NFL team, thus it is becomes an NFL thread. There is nothing wrong with comparing one team's radio network with another. Not everyone in DFW likes the Cowboys and may seek an alternative, a la the Saints, Texans, or Westwood One. Those fans who choose the Saints as that alternative may be delighted to find a Saints affiliate in the area. Like I said, if you don't like it, move on.

As far as the Saints Radio Network stats go, the Saints were #11 in 2009 with just over 246,000 listeners a game. The Cowboys were #15 with 213,000, according to wwl.com. That number is based on how many listeners that team's flagship stations have, not the whole network. The Cowboys did, however, beat out the Saints in 2007 and 2008.

I gave the Cowboys props in one of my previous threads for having one of the biggest radio networks in all of the NFL. They have affiliates in Missouri, West Palm Beach, Memphis, and Mexico City. That is really impressive. The Saints have affiliates in five different states, but not near as many as the Cowboys. So it's not like I'm hear to bash the Cowboys and only give props to my team. I'm just here to enlighten everyone on how a competitor is doing, which seems to be the theme of this website, isn't it? I'm sure you would want to give a shout out to your favorite team if you lived in a different state. As far as the scoreboard goes, congrats, you beat the Super Bowl champions. I would be happy if I were you, too.

Hey man..all I can say is congrats on the Superbowl. I'm not a true fan of either team as my team moved to Tennessee and I gave up on NFL. However, YOU know that above figure is complete bunk that is used by WWL AE's to sell ads and that is all. WWL is saying they outperform the fan...that's like the whole gold medal in the special olympics argument. So WWL and their gigantic signal and good weekday/weekend following beat the 105.3 for the games but lose to The Ticket and their weak signal during the games the two years prior. Well..here's what else WWL has probably done..I'm assuming they probably run various infomercials on Saturday and Sunday mornings..well I'm going to go out on a limb and say those informercials have higher ratings then whatever is on the fan at that time. Amazing. However when compared to early weekend morning against 1310 the Ticket in Dallas, wwl has a higher *** but lower ratings. We can spin it any way you like but the Saints fanbase is maybe 1/20th of that of the Cowboys in the Southwest and maybe 1/50th worldwide.
 
Has anyone done a study to see how much of a bump in listener ship/network affiliations a team gets after a super bowl win?

Surge I agree with you on many points but I was just pointing out that if WWL ran dead air they might possibly outdraw the fan. WWL seems more dominant then say WBAP in DFW. And as for the fan, it's just filler for when the Ticket is in a commercial break.
 
I would say the signal. The Ticket hosts blow The Fan out of the water, but the signal was crappy. The games on The Fan do sound crisp & clear, but their pre & post game shows need some help..
 
it costs cbs $125,000 a month to keep this poor excuse of a station on the air. the only time they get any kind of ratings is during the cowboys season. have you honestly looked at the ratings? theyre horrible. they really need to consider flipping formats. bring back the old and out with the new.

Up here in the Collinfederacy, 104.1 comes in 5x5. I listen to it for pre and postgame and watch on TV ... unless the Ticket is hosting Mystery Cowboys Theater. Then I'll mute Joe and Troy.

CBS is dead set on having a sports station in a top 5 market, so lots of dogs are going to die before the last one does in this instance.

Liberty, did you try pulling in WWL 870AM during the Super Bowl? I was able to pull in both KWKH 1130 and WWL from Austin, and WWL came in clear as a bell. I always have trouble pulling in 1130 in Dallas, however.

The Local 870 Prevented WWL for the game. But agreed their Post Game Coverage was Amazing.

you know what is killing The Fan, fact that despite fact they advertise sports talk radio...sounds more like talk radio

They keep talking about stuff that has NOTHING to do with sports, you hear same stuff get on talk radio.

Example: other day 2 Dallas Cowboys signed tender offers, they couldn't be bothered about that. Mavericks lost a big game, Rangers won opening day...they were not interested in talking about any of that.

Ridiculous...sports talk without the sports.....but long as they pay Jerry Jones his pound of flesh...he won't care
