Wow way to keep it radio related. Five Superbowls, sure no arguing there. How many in the last 14 years? Thats right ZERO. Using facts, (Saints-Cowboys score) and then wild speculation, (superbowl ratings of 3people) just comes off as child-like,(meaning my 7 yr old argues in the same fashon) bitter, and frankly sounds an awful lot like an arrogant NY Yankees fan. (but without a recent championship to back it up) Not to mention just plain embarassing to other Cowboys fans. Why dont you just move on from the bitterness, and look forward to a promising next year. are you that bitter about 2008, 2003, 2000, and all the other years they just didn't cut it?

Now to get back to something resembling a radio related post. Someone else had mentioned that The Fan will be around for years to come. Now while that could be true, you have to look at the owners. CBS. They shift formats as quickly as the wind shifts direction. Remeber how fast they were behind Free-FM nationally, and how fast they abandoned it?? As soon as a NYC bean counter thinks that more money can be made in another format, the Cowboys will be on 1080, and we'll all be introduced to 105.3 Now/AMP FM. A third CHR sounds dopey I know, but is it any more Dopey than the 3rd sports FM? Don't forget, just because they control stations in the metroplex, doesnt mean they understand what works in the metroplex.

Now that I've tried to bring some radio relevance to this post. Let the name calling, child-like, bitter "My teams better than yours! No sir, mine is! No mine!) non related football banter continue.

If you wanna argue with the Super Bowl Champion, you need to not lose in the Divisional Round of the playoffs by 31 points. That was the point of your assignment but I guess you missed it. I could care less about stats, sure he threw for more yards, but let us not forget that the Saints Defense forced six turnovers. This is fun for me because I am going to win this argument everytime. You know why?

Also, like I said, the game we lost to you was meaningless, the Saints were banged up really bad, and had been the past two weeks. The Saints were fortunate to get wins on the road against St. Louis and Atlanta. In the game against Dallas, our good fortune ran out, but not because we weren't the better team, but because we were the more banged up team. I will let our play in the playoffs confirm this.


And to keep it RADIO RELATED, Mr. Board Editor, Pushr did question the Saints Radio Network's #11 rating, and again, why lie about being #11? I thought we were at least in the Top 10 if not the Top 5 in radio listeners. Our 246,000 was well short of the Chicago Bears Radio Network, according to Arbitron.
 
I hate to see posts moved to TIO but sometimes it's the only thing to do. Admittedly my thoughts about the Cowboys broadcasts on the Fan aren't that different from a lot of people here, and in view of the direction this thread took, I'm sorry I had a part in the derailment. Thus, I thought it might be a good idea to try to get totally back on track.

This isn't really about size of the fan base or the reach of the Dallas Cowboys radio network, nor the team's record. It's about the Cowboys being on The Fan. Having them has not and probably will not make any difference in 105.3's overall ratings in the long run, if there is a long run. It's good for bragging rights, and that's all. In fact, the Fan's whole approach is primarily based on calls from listeners, many of whom are either biased, totally uninformed or both, and the shows are mainly hosted by guys who aren't going to the rip the team when they deserve it and who couldn't hold a show together if their lives depended on it. If the people at CBS can't see this, then they're more incompetent than we've thought. Also, for full disclosure, I worked for them twice. The first time should have told me something.
 
I've heard it from multiple sources, the Ticket walked out on the Cowboys deal because Jerry wanted them to pay a bunch of expenses and wanted them to get none (Zero, Nada, Zilch) of the inventory to sell to recoup their expenses.

From what I'm told, having the Cowboys made zero (None, Nada, Zilch) difference in their ratings. Might have made a difference on Sunday afternoons, but nada (Zilch, Zero, None) difference in the overall weekly (or monthly) ratings that could be "monetized" to make a difference in billing.

Cumulus was smart (I know, unbelievable as that seems) and got out. CBS grabbed the chance, thinking it would make a differencein breaking the Fan into the market. And now they're stuck with a station that gets beat in their target demo by stations that target teenage girls. That's right, KISS and i93 both draw more Men 25-54 than KRLD-FM. I think they really thought just getting the Cowboys would be enough. Now that station is in a world of hurt (Someone posted earlier that they're losing 125K A month!!!)...

And JD, I thimk they can see it, they just don't know what else to do. They need a format that can get decent ratings, but one that they can still running TMS races, Rangers baseball, and Cowboys football. Can you think of a good music format that that would all fit in?

Surely, the Rangers could just go back to KRLD 1080 full-time.

That would just leave TMS and the Cowboys. Country or classic rock could handle NASCAR and NFL games...they do in many places in the south. Even then, I imagine the Cowboys games could go to any other full class C sister (KLUV, KJKK, or KVIL). Two of them previously were Cowboys flagships.
 
As a non-Cowboys fan, I don't see why KRLD-FM is a problem. KRLD's coverage area is awesome for an FM station. I drove from Austin to Dallas last week and I could pick up KRLD in Waco.

The station's programming may not be great, but don't you want one of the most powerful FM stations carrying the Cowboys?

If you wanted the best coverage area Dallas had to offer, you would look to WBAP-AM, which can be heard in the daytime from Oklahoma City to Austin, but when the thunder rolls and the lightning strikes, wouldn't you rather be on FM? KTCK can't offer what KRLD can in terms of coverage area.

As far as the derailment goes, I was bringing up a similar situation on the Saints Radio Network, as well as the fact that SRN is bringing in stations just south and east of the MetroPlex, and that is when ButtNPushr stepped in with this little nugget:

Pretty friggin' rude, isn't it? And of course tempers flared and I mentioned the Saints winning the Super Bowl and he chimed in with we beat the Saints, and yada-yada-yada, derailment ensued.

I just hope Saints and Cowboys fans can coexist, even on a DFW board.

If I was the PD of one of those stations, I'd be fighting tooth and nail to keep those sports as far away as I could from my station. None of those 3 stations appeal to the same demo/lifetsyle group as your typical sports listener. So you carry the games/races, don't draw any listeners in AND drive away the listeners you do have that want music on a Sunday afternoon...
 
A bit of trivia, and a question afterward: the Dallas Cowboys have had several "Flagship" stations during the team's almost 50 year history. One of the least memorable is also the first one, KBOX 1480. A long running one was the old KLIF 1190, with Jay Randolph doing play-by-play for a number of years before he went to NBC. Perhaps the most successful run, all things considered, was with KRLD 1080. I'm sure there are some of you who can come up with a detailed list of stations and dates.

Now the hard part. We've talked about how the Cowboys wound up on The Fan, but what about the other stations in the past? What prompted changes to another "Flagship?"
 
Well, since all the stations involved have been mentioned already here's the time-line, complete with formats at the time:

1960-1961 KBOX Top 40
1962-1971 KLIF Top 40
1972-1990 KRLD News/Sports/Variety (with some Easy listening music before 1980)
1991-2001 KVIL AC
2002-2005 KLUV Oldies
2006-2008 KTCK Sports
2009- KRLD-FM Sports (purportedly)

Oh, and while we're in a trivial mood, there's an interesting fact about 1310; it holds the distinction of being the only station in Dallas to broadcast two local pro football teams over the years. As WRR it aired the Dallas Texans games beginning in 1960 (following that, of course, in 1962 the team became the Kansas City Chiefs). But the way things are going, maybe we'll see another station make history, too, by being the only one to have two separate runs as a Dallas Cowboys "Flagship."

If it is anything like the negotiations in 1990(?) KVIL got the Cowboys for two main reasons. Jerry was a Chapman fan and he wanted the Cowboys broadcast in stereo. Sounds strange but so is Jerry. The second was MONEY and a lot of it. KRLD/TSN could not have made a profit after paying Jerry the amount he demanded for the rights. At times the negotiations were surreal...
