Cowhead No. 1 In... Fort Myers?

Yesterday, Cowhead said that his show, when it was on in morning drive, actually ranked No. 1 in 25-54 in the Fort Myers area, beating folks such as Stan & Haney on 96.1 and the like.

Makes you wonder if the 25-54'ers in SW Florida think less of radio in their own backyard, and it also makes you wonder how much damage Cowhead - out of Tampa - can do to afternoon drive in Fort Myers.

While that's a pretty interesting fact if it's true, I'm sure it didn't turn into ONE dollar for Cox Broadcasting.

Since all of us don’t get to see all the ratings ( except 12+ ), could one of you full time radio guys post them for us little people?

I hope he blows the rock station in Ft. Myers out of the market.....Judging by the competition I really don't see that as being a problem...lol

While they may have not earned one dollar on that fact, here's what it proves...
Decent programming on the frequency 102.5 can make an impact on the entire west coast.... and with Bubba now in that time slot, he has coverage of numerous markets all with one stick. Without adding one more station, I bet 102.5 goes up in every book including Ft. Myers, Sarasota, Lakeland, Sebring, and will probably even show up towards the bottom of Orlando. While I do realize they typically don't sell these areas, you can bet Bubba will crow about it when it happens.

Since the tower upgrade circa 1990, 102.5 has mostly been treated as a Tampa fringe signal, the place on which one puts "alternative" or placeholder formats. The audience from the Sunshine Skyway down to the Everglades -- and over to the Turnpike -- has been mostly ignored.

Cowhead #1 in Ft. Myers?

Completely, absolutely FALSE.

"The Cowhead Show" on WHPT in Ft. Myers in the Fall Book he was referring to (the numbers came out on Jan 23rd) DIDN'T EVEN SHOW IN THE BOOK. You could say, LAST PLACE.

He's being dishonest to his audience, but it's pretty funny when you consider what a big lie it is.

I don't know, I heard quite a few callers from Fort Myers on the air the day Cowhead broke the news - or at least the callers claimed they were from Fort Myers, anyway... Not to discredit either Cowhead's report, or BigSmelly420's counterpoint, but the calls that day did sound genuine.

Those calls may have been genuine, but Cowhead was not.

In the Ft. Myers book, Men 25-54, WJGO was #1 with a 13.5 share (Bob format, all music), WARO was #2 with a 12.4 (Bob and Tom), #3 was WJBX with a 10.0 (Zito and Garrett).

Again, Cowhead on WHPT in Fort Myers with Men 25-54 was in LAST PLACE with a 0.0. Did not show. Not first place. No disputing it. He was lying.

I was not lying....but I was wrong.
Someone sent me the ratings info that said Ft. Myers 6-10am 25-54 and it had us at #1. After I opened my big mouth, I was told that the info was not all of Ft. Myers, but rather a breakdown of certain areas within that market. I am assuming maybe by county.
Either way, I was not lying...just wrong.
I also have some friends who work in radio there, so the main reason I even talked about it in the first place was to bust balls.

1st Place in Ft. Myers...or last....I still got the same amount of bonus money !

Well, you were being less than truthful when you said "I'm holding the Arbitron Book for Ft. Myers in my hand right now, and guess what place we are in Men 25-54 in the Ft. Myers metro?" (not exact quote, but pretty close).

Besides, you can't really think you got a 0.0 in the book, but had success in "certain areas"!

Either way, funny bit because of how outrageous the "lie" was.  Less funny now that you're  backpeddling.

Just becuse he had to explain the bit to you only makes it less funny to YOU. To me, this is an extension of the bit that makes the original even funnier.

Like the man said, he was busting balls. He only found out later that there should have been an asterisk affixed to the number. No lie involved, just a little theater of the mind...necessary in all walks of life, not just radio.

Explain the bit? If he would have said "Yeah it was a lie, deal with it, it was funny", then that would be one thing. What he said was "I was confused". Now, was it theater of the mind, or confusion? If it is theater of the mind, then it's great. If he's claiming confusion, then he's backpeddling.

Asterisk? For what? When he comes on in the 3pm hour and says "I'm holding in my hand the Arbitron book for Ft. Myers" and claims to read out if it that he was Number one "in the Ft. Myers metro", there's no asterisk needed to qualify anything. He later backpeddled in his show saying that the info was "put in his box", and now he's saying it might have been in one county.

I don't need the value of theater of the mind to be explained to me. I understand why he did it. But here, in this forum, his words were being taking as valid. And here, in this forum, I am refuting what he had to say, just setting the record straight for radio people who are interested enough to visit this message board.

Yuck...why did I even bother to try and be honest here.

This site is like crack...horrible....but yet I keep coming back to it !

Word, Cowhead. You guys are sounding great in the afternoon, by the way.

The only thing you did, 420, was create the question. The only person who could answer it was Cowhead, and he was gracious enough to do so. Thread over. But no! Now you label it as backpeddling, which I guess means selling something in the wrong direction, but I digress...or maybe I am just backpedaling.

A lot of people try to make something out of nothing, especially on this board. I like to think that they are usually under the influence of exactly what your board name is. I look forward to the next non-controversy that gets blown out of proportion.

I appreciate Cowhead explaining what happened. Just for my information and not to bust balls, did the listeners get the same 'fess up?

I too appreciate Cowhead's participation in the discussion.

I think it's completely appropriate to question his explanation. I don't think he should be so hurt by my accusations of backpedlling. If you want to "bust balls", you should be able to take it, too.

I highly doubt he'll get on the air and say "I wasn't in first place, I was in last place. I was confused", nor do I think it's necessary.

Yes I did. And talked at length about the idiot from sales who left it for me without giving me the whole story.

Thanks! Eating humble pie isn't easy, but sometimes it's the right thing to do and I'm sure most of us think better of you for being willing to publicly set the record straight.

Cowhead... Any chance 102.5 will do a semi-format change? I mean I love Led Zep and Rush, but I mean we hear the same tunes and the same bands all the time. Every 1-2 hours Zep, Rush, Doors, Floyd, Ac/Dc, etc etc are played. Metallica only has the Black album played and its like 3 songs? People tune in for music and great Djs that are funny. Music is lacking and that ratings for 102.5 is always near bottom (2.5). Sure your show and bubbas will bring it up some, but what about different music.

Suggestions will be like more hard rock 80s bands and classic metal. Skid Row, Poison, Anthrax, Pantera, Megadeath, Suicidel Tendencies, Slaughter, Warrent, Queensryche etc etc etc. Not everyone will agree but it will bring in a huge group of listeners that only listen to old tapes and Cds cause its not on the radio. 102.5 is a classic rock station, so lets play classic rock and mix it up more instead of the same bands every 1-2 hours.. its boring..really boring. Lets make the station fun. cause thats what the music is lacking...fun!
